Hurricane Ike took one more boat and left one with a lot of damage. The amazing thing is, this is in Ohio!
Bill Flynn lost his tanzier 22 as his mooring was dragged to shore. He watched as his boat ended up brushing up against a steel wall and eventually sank.
John O'leary's 26 footer also dragged his mooring into a dock losing his 7 hp outboard and damaging his hull, transom and rub rail to the tune of $7000. It also almost sank.
Both these men suffered the 70 mph winds of hurricane IKE on Mosquito lake. This was the worst storm in our history. The winds and water were so high that we all watched as Bills boat sank near shore. It is totaled. John's can be fixed but at a high cost. John had insurance, Bill did not.
When I moored mine at Pymatuning we put one of these in the bottom. Let me know if you would like the deatils of how we did it. They sell a mooring version of this on a web site for over $100. The only difference is the mooring one is galvenized. I think it would take many years for it to rust out.
We screwed this into the bottom of the lake and attached the chain to it. No other weight is used. We did it without diving with a long pole that was fashioned to allow us to pin the eye of the anchor through the bottom of the pole. It was a little difficult to screw in from a pontoon boat. I thought it would be easier to do in the winter by just cutting a hole in the ice. Using a diver would be best. Here is a link to the company that makes the expense version: http://www.helixmooring.com/bulkhead.html#roundshaft
