The resolution is a little on the low side--probably a reason for the nice price. My Garmin 276 has double the pixels (480x320) on a 3.8" diagonal screen. I like that resolution for a chartplotter--clear detail, sharp numbers, and good screen layout flexibility. My fishfinder, a cheap Garmin 160C, has much lower resolution, but enough for its purpose.
John, I got that email as well and wondered. Might want to go to store and compare resolution to other(higher priced models) for comparison. But price is hard to turn down. Also was not keen about transom mount transducer. Steve A
FYI, John, I'm using a transom mount... Works fine so far (two seasons), even on plane in over 250'. The builder of my boat said they hadn't had good luck with inside-hull transducers--my hull is a 9-ply layup with encapsulated fir stringers and such--I don't know what the real issue is, but it's built like a tank. If an inside-hull unit worked, I would've gone that way, but... You'll just have to position it so it stays submerged on both tacks--that could be the key issue.
Presuming that Santa sails with you, use my technique, I always play up the increased safety that comes with the new toy..err...tool, um instrument. So far this has worked for a new engine, VHF, chartplotter (she loves this one), radar reflector, and some other things. Tell Santa how it'll help you avoid nasty things that hurt the boat, and might help you to catch fish if Santa's a fish fan.
This has it's drawbacks, we're currently in a moratorium, but birthdays are coming...
John, I did a search and found a few complaints re accurate readings for transom mount when heeling but also many who have no problems. If you do get a chance to check it out at WM, see if they have a swing mount. My new IPhone has a $45 chart program I can download I have also been considering. Steve A
Me thinks Raymarine wants to move the A60 and A65 because they are releasing 3 new units in the A series line up this November. And yes the new ones have better VGA resolution. The digital sounder is built in to the unit. Screens from 5 to 6.4 inches.
That is a great price $599 (after rebate) for that unit if you can live with the 5.7" QVGA screen. The A60 fishfinder package does have a separate digital sounder which is a plus over an analog one.
