Hello to the forum. My wife and I have owned our Catalina 25 (tall rig, fin keel, Sail #3053) since mid-August and have enjoyed 2 months of driveway sailing in Lubbock, Tx. But, the time has come to make the move to Corpus Christi and we are looking forward to being there November 7. Our plans are to keep it at the Municipal Marina and we would appreciate any advice from local sailors.
We are beginning sailors. We also have a Buccaneer 18 that we have sailed at a local lake for the last year. The Catalina is our first big boat and this will be our first venture into salt water. We have fantasies of retiring to a sailboat in a few years and this will be a major step in that direction.
We have used the last two months to replace the standing and running rigging and add a topping lift and spare halyard, add two bilge pumps, sterilize the water tank and replace all water lines, overhaul the Whale water pumps, replace the brass thru-hull fittings, replace the mast wiring, lights and antenna, refinish the exterior teak, replace the curtains, make new fitted mattress covers and sheets, move the battery under the companionway steps and add a battery charger, and to compound and wax the hull. In other words, we are eager to get it out of the driveway so that we can take a break.
Here are a few pictures. The boat doesn't have a name yet. It seems that naming a boat is harder than naming a child.
Welcome aboard Walt. You have a very nice looking boat! I understand the naming situation. I've been trying to come up with a new name for my boat all summer. I thought I had one (Ragtop) figured out the day but the admiral shot that one down immediately.
I like your supports for carrying the mast and furler. If you get a spare minute after the move you might think of posting the dimensions here on the forum in the Technical Tips section.
Does your truck pull the boat OK? I have a F150 Supercab pickup and I'm wondering how well it will pull my '89 wing keel.
We used a 6-cylinder F150 to pull the boat from Albuquerque, NM, to to Lubbock and it was tough. We have a friend with a Toyota Tundra who is going to help with the trip to Corpus Christi.
Actually there are several parts of our upgrades that I thought might be useful in the Technical Tips section - things that I looked for help but had to figure out on my on.
I'll take more detailed pictures of the mast and furler carriers when I do the final rigging for the move. It was all put together by the PO but he did a nice job.
Walt, welcome. Corpus is my part time cruising grounds. In fact we plan to be there in Feb. We purchased Fellow Ship, a 1989 w/k a few months ago and spent over 2 months on the trailer in the back yard so we know how it feels to be getting close to getting wet!!! We keep ours in a lake in the Ft Worth area but have always pulled our boats and gone south for a couple weeks every year. We normally launch at Aransas Pass, but we had s/k w/b boats. Now I figuring on launching in Corpus since they have a couple of lifts. Keep in touch and we'll try to hook up in Feb.
Welcome to the Forum Walt, and to S.Texas. With a tall rig you probably won't need to run a 150% genoa - the wind blows down there (it's why Corpus holds many wind surfing championships!).
