I bought one of the commercially produced antennas - and they do work for $190 or so. This super wifi antenna will cost you $35 and a couple of hours of time. I found the article in the September issue of Ocean Navigator and the link to all of the instructions and parts required are at http://wireless.gumph.org/articles/homemadeomni.html Sten

My solution to the "always looking for WIFI" problem is a Sprint Air Card. I have been using it exclusively for internet access both at home and on the road for over a year and a half now and am very pleased with it. The trick is to chose a carrier that has high speed (EVDO or other) in your area and the areas you travel. I have my air card plugged into a tiny Cradlepoint wireless router which provides my own "WIFI" wherever I am. This setup is not expensive and in my case allowed me to cancel DSL at home and I use Diredtv so Cable was not an option. The monthly cost is no more than other solutions and it goes where I go.
Neat solutins Bob. That gives you the best of both worlds... net connect via your phone or by local wifi if avaialble. Makes me think of that verizon ad about 'deadspots'
