I found an easy way to take apart a pelican hook the other day. Rita & I were done puttering around the boat & I went to hook the lifeline back onto the starboard catbird seat. I popped the pelican hook open to reconnect, and all the pieces simply fell out into Neptune's realm. I have no idea what happened, maybe the ring cotter was nearly all the way off, or the spring broke, no clue. I just watched the pieces fall into the water leaving me with just the body of the hook & no guts. I guess I'm glad it happened while I was standing on the dock & not when one of us had fallen onto the lifeline or something. I wonder if I can find replacement parts to fix it, or if I'll have to replace the whole thing?

I had a guest remove the ring one day. They thought that was how you opened the pelican hook. Needless to say, they had a very bad look on there face when all the "guts" of the hook made the dreaded "plop-plop" sound as they hit the water and sank out of site.
I never could find replacement parts, so I bought a new pelican hook. I think it was a Johnson Marine product?
UPDATE: Take your pelican hook to West Marine if you are buying their replacement kits. The hooks that come with our boat are not Johnson Marine and the pins are differnt diameters and have a different step cut in them.
