My keel winch handle always slips off of the winch. Very difficult and dangerous operation raising and lowering the winch. Is this common? Any way to fix it? Does a new keel winch have a different way of holding the handle better? I have a 1979 SKTR.
The handle/winch interface hasn't changed over the years--it's still the simple and tounge/groove design used on original winches. If the "tounge" portion has become worn (i.e., rounded or distorted) the handle is more likely to slip off when cranking. Not the best design!
Aside from cranking technique, you can obtain the fitting and handle from Catalina or Catalina Direct to replace both if your components are worn. You might want to check the general condition of the winch as well, as it too may require replacement (inspect it with the keek down, so that the cable doesn't obscure the drum). The entire winch/cable assembly is not expensive, relatively easy to replace, and critical for maintaining proper operation of your swing keel.
I'm a new owner, so in no position to give real advice, BUT---the PO when I bought my 1981 SK said"lean into the handle and keep it tight when cranking". This has worked the few times I have cranked, but the whole rusty works is on the replacement list..the long, long, LONG replacement list. Fair winds, Ron Orion SK SR SW Fl.

I had a similar problem caused by rust buildup on the handle as well as the socket into which it fit. It took some care to clean the slot inside the socket but having done so the handle worked again as it should.
