This Association is a member of US Sailing. The only benefit I can see is that they then list our Nationals on their website. We pay $125 / year for this. It is time to renew.

If you read about all the mis-doings over at US Sailing, I seriously question sending $ over there and I have abandoned my own personal membership.

Your comments are desired.

We are also a member of BOAT/US and because of that you get a discount on your personal membership. I do see some value in this.

Does anyone else use it?

Times are tight, don't want to spend $ we don't have to.

Jim, not being involved in the Nationals, I cant respond but do question the value. Is our membership benefiting?
RE BoatUS, I have my insurance and towing service with BoatUS and have never gotten a discount and no one at BoatUS ask ever asked me. How do I get the discount and what is it good for and how much do members get off?
Steve A
PS, I just got off the phone with BoatUS who confirmed I DO get a discount on my membership. The regular price is $19 and the discounted rate is $12.50. Just wish I knew that 4 years ago!
Bottom line, I support membership with BoatUS. Lets let members know about this.

I think you're right Jim... but out of curiosity, in a nutshell, what are the mis-doings at US Sailing?

To find out more about US Sailing read all about it at Sailing Anarchy.

I don't want to go into the whole thing but there have been a lot of legal expenses due to various lawsuits over the Olympics, accusations of mis appropriation of funds by the directors, and so on. Plus a whole lot more rants. I can hardly decide between facts and fiction but I am not sure I want the current organization managing my money.

We've already renewed with BoatUS. Our group payment offers you a discount.

I can't see anything that our group contribution to US Sailing offers you, the member. Unless you feel strongly that we should support the national sailing sanctioning body.

To get your discounts, go to the <font color="blue">Assn Members Area</font id="blue"> see the top right hand corner of this screen.

Log in. Don't use your forum username/password! Use the user name and password in the membership letter you were sent!

Click on Boat US/US Sailing Discounts

There is a discount code for Boat US.

Now that I've checked this I see there is a discount at US Sailing, you can buy the racing rules of sailing at a discounted price.

I am OK with dropping US Sailing. I do belong to BoatUS but did not know about the discount. Thanks for the tip.

Following Jim's advice in getting the US Boat Code off the Assn Members Area, you then call up Boat US and order your membership over the phone mentioning the code. I did that this past year and got the discount.

I just called BoatUS and even though I renewed last month, they are mailing me a check for the difference. Yipeeee.
BTW Jim, someone needs to fix the BoatUS membership amount on our site. Its $12.50. I think our site say $9.00. It needs updating!!

There are several benefits from a U S Sailing membership. Our yacht club promotes the membership by offering a $5 discount at our major regattas. Also, Monday I received my new copy of the 2009-2012 Racing Rules of Sailing, free because of my membership. I also get reduced rate BoatUS membership through the club.
If you do not race, there is probably little benefit to being a US Sailing member.

I reap no benefit from US Sailing, but if enough members gain something from an organizational membership, I don't object. If a minority benefits and our organization doesn't, I would be in favor of dropping membership. I suggest drawing members attention to this thread with a sticky on the general forum.

DavidP - yes, you get those benefits as an individual member, I do, too.

We are talking about our <u>Association</u> being a member, which does not result in any benefit to you, other than that non-US Sailing individual members can buy the Racing Rules of Sailing at a discount.

You get that anyhow if you are a US Sailing individual member, plus most clubs give members small discounts on their regatta fees.

There are lots of reasons to be an individual member, you also get SAIL magazine for $5/year.

I see no real benefit to the US Sailing membership and am in favor of dropping it, and thanks for the heads up about BoatUS, I'll be on the phone shortly!
