To those of you that have the inboard on their boats, do you have enough room between the nuts and the end of the shaft to be able to clean out and replace the packing? Can you post pictures? The last time I had it done, the person told me he didn't have enough room on the shaft to completely separate the nuts and had to unscrew the motor at the mounts and pull the whole thing forward. I'm now thinking about doing this and just wanted to be prepared.

Got a picture of the space between? I don't have a diesel in the Cat but having to move the engine just to get enough room for the stuffing box is a pretty bad design.
My bronze shaft was worn and I cut it, removed the entire assembly and replaced with a stainless shaft. On reassembly there was barely room to insert the new packing. Removing the old hardened packing is going to be the most difficult. After having a new shaft machined, I discovered Catalina Direct has the shaft for a 27 that I believe is the same length and have a stainless hub assembly as well that will fit on the 25. Might need to cut the new shaft and have a new keyway cut but this will be much less expensive than having a shaft and hub machined.
