Hi all! I just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Scott and the admiral is Sara. We are new to sailing but not to boating having had power boats for the past 25yrs. We sold our 28ft power boat due to rising fuel/marina/upkeep costs. Not wanting to get out of boating I thought we would try sailing. "WHAT!!! ARE YOU NUTS!" the wife said. "Why not?" I said,so with that settled I started my search, looking for a Cat25 WK from reading this forum. I found a 1987 in Clinton CT, good shape, and in May without any sailing experience ( I understood the basics, that is put the sails up and catch the wind and the boat will move...right?) jumped in the boat and sailed it back 65mi. to Glen Cove NY in 13hrs. Looking back now I realize how lucky I was! We named the boat "IMPULSE" on that ride home due to the impulse decision to sell the power boat and buy the sailboat. We spent the rest of the summer day sailing and learning more about sailing and wondering why we didn't do this sooner. Now I guess I will be Catalina Directs best friend with all the upgrades planned,Bimini top was first after the first 95deg. day and the wind died. Anyway I would like to thank all of you for all of the info I got from ghosting this forum so the least I could do is become a member.I'm sure I will have many questions to follow. Thanks again. Scott&Sara

Welcome Scott & Sara. That's a great looking '87! Is it a tall rig?

Scott - sounds a little like my story, except I'm gonna keep my stink-potters for now. I bought Kukla a couple months ago at the start of the "crash" for next to nothing. Hope to slowly (!!) put some basic upgrades into her without wiping out the bank (is this possible?). I believe she is in OK sailing condition. Gonna keep the Grady White in my yard for starters and get into the Cat25. I sailed 30 years ago competitively. Hope I remember the basics (like how to open a beer while at the helm!!).

Good Luck - see you at the Block!

Hi Derek, Its a standard rig, wing keel, and as far as opening the beer, Isn't that what the Admiral is for?

Welcome Scott and Sara! Outstanding choice! I like your GPS mount. I'll watch for Impulse in Eastern LIS, or when I head down toward the western end from time to time. Sarge is pretty identifiable... (I went the other way from you. )

Scott welcome to the site and the Association. Impulse looks really nice, but I would loose the admiral beer quote or you might find yourself doing a lot of single handed sailing if you get to do any.

Scott,
Congratulations on your "new" Catalina and joining us on the Forum.

Over 20 years ago, I used to live in Huntington, Long Island and sail my ODay 23 out of Huntington Harbor. Glen Cove being just down the road/Sound. I really enjoyed that sailing area and overnighters in the Oyster Bay Sandhole.

Welcome Scott and Sara, to Catalinas and to this forum. Looks like you found a beautiful and well kept boat. I know you both will have great times with her.

Welcome Scott and Sara to the Association, the site and most of all to sailing these great boats! I'm across the sound from you and look forward to seeing you at some point on the Sound. BTW 28 years ago I sailed my first sailboat from Clinton to Darien -- it took me 18 hours over two days so for beginners you did quite well -- then again, you were sailing a Cat 25!

Thanks for the welcome everybody. Peter, It sounds like we may cross paths someday. One of our favorite spots to overnight (spent 5 days there one time) is in Zieglers Cove on the East side of Long Neck Pt. Very pretty. We also overnight in Oyster Bay in West Harbor (west side of Centre Island) very easy trip for us. A nice day sail for us is across to New Rochelle, go east to Greenwich Cove, back across to Oyster Bay and back west to Glen Cove or some variation depending on the wind. So if you ever are in that area just wave at all the Cat25's. one of them might be us!

Scott--I'm looking through the rain down on the entrance to Ziegler's Cove from above Scott's Cove this minute, in the home of my "very good friend". (I once lived in Darien for 25 years.) Next summer maybe I'll get to throw some wakes at ya!

Gosh Dave -- if it were a rainy day in summer I'd suggest drinks at Tokeneke Club!

Welcome Scott and Sara -
Cathy and I are over in Stratford and we're always looking for an excuse to sail to an LIS meetup and share a few beers and stories over a weekend.
