We are planning a summer trip North and considering doing the Broughton Islands and wondered if anyone out there has ventured this far North. One route from Anacortes, Wa. would be via Desolation Sound going by way of the "back door" avoiding Johnstone Straight as much as possible. The other thought is to trailer up Vancouver Is. to somewhere on North Coast such as Telegraph Cove or Port Hardy and sailing across Queen Charlotte straight to the Broughtons. This is an ambitious trip in a C25 with an outboard but with an eye to the weather can be done. Winter is time for dreaming about sailing in these great waters again and I am sure doing it...Dave

When I had the C250, I used to trailer as close as possible to the area I wanted to sail, in this case I would trailer to Port Hardy or Telegraph Cove to just sail in the Broughton Islands. I would recommend the Tsawwassen to Nanaimo ferry since I've used this route to Vancouver Island many times before with car and trailer. The downside of this trip is finding a place to park your car and trailer at your destination and you will have drive thru USA customs coming back and they've always have tossed my boat....
If you left from Anacortes by boat, how long do you think it would take you to get to the Broughton Islands?

Thanks for comments Paulj...Here is the Cruise plan: Anacortes to Desolation Sound= 9days, Refuge Cove to Lagoon Cove= 9days, Cruising Broughtons 17days, and return to Anacortes. This is with 1wk buffer for bad weather so it is a total of 60days moving at a comfortable rate. Hopefully the rain you have been having will be over. We were up with boat in 2007 and had great time cruising to Desolation Sound. You live in a great part of the world...Dave
David, sounds like fun! I'd like to do that some day. Bear in mind that the pumpout situation in BC waters is not good. We were amazed at the lack of pumpouts even in the Southern Gulf Islands. Canadian sailors told us, later confirmed by the editor of a popular PNW cruising guide, that sailors there simple pump their waste overboard once clear of the harbor. We are considering adding a macerator so that we can do the same since we enjoyed our sailing there a great deal.

When do you plan on going to the Broughton Islands? I was wondering about the route are you going to take from Anacortes to Desolation?
I'm going to Desolation Sound, not sure when and stay for awhile then will pickup some summer visiting relatives in Comox Bay. There will be 3 groups and 3 different times.... whenever they fly-in or drive there. They are making plans now and will call me in a couple of weeks and let me know. Mean time I'm planing some routes and fixing those little things on the boat.

Paul...we have decided to pass on doing the Broughtons. Now we are just doing an open ended cruise somewhere in US/BC waters. There are just too many great places to pick from. We will visit many of the places we have been to before and mix it up with new places as well. We will leave Anacortes by end of June or first wk of July and do our usual route to Nanaimo. After that who knows, maybe to Desolation again or? Hope we can connect with you somewhere.
David, There's another thread going with several of us planning a much shorter trip to the San Juan's at roughly the same time you're planning on launching from Anacortes. Maybe we could meet up with you as well for the beginning of your trip?
