SO, hanging out in Portland OR taking care of my mom who had a stroke, with not much sailing oriented to do... (Thanks Dave B. for your well wishes on a different thread - forgot to post reply). So while our vessel is in GA, we be here - no cruising for a bit.

Anyway, we decided to go to the PDX boat show just for kicks. Wow, what a difference between Boston, Providence, Newport, & Annapolis shows. No sailmakers, no mattress people, no stove/barby folks, no canvas folks, nothing but stink potters and a few Bendy Toys and a Hunter 45 or something.. There was a Catalina booth, looks like the C22 folks are strong in these here parts. Talked to the Coasties for a bit and one of them observed that the boats on display would never get past the bar that connects the Columbia River to the ocean - "fold em in half," referring again to my not so favorite production boats. Tough place to sail!

It was weird, everyone was so hungry they were practically chewing on your arm if you stopped to talk. I stopped to look at a new Yanmar 30 hp to replace the aging 27 hp Yanmar on Lysistrata. Not that I'm really in the market - yet - but I wanted to see what all was entailed. This guy actually tried to sell me a 110 HP engine with slightly a larger footprint! $7600 for the 30HP and $9400 for the 110 HP.... Waterskiing anyone? The MacG 26 was already on display so I politely declined.

Sten,
Rita & I are hoping your mom recovers well, strokes are no fun for anyone involved. My dad had several of them, fortunately they were not the full blown type but it was still difficult. It's nice that you're able to take care of her, it probably means the world to her.

Should you guys get up Seattle way, look us up & we'll go have dinner.

Thanks David. We are looking forward to a little road trip - so I'll tuck that away should we be able to break free.

Sten,

Wish your family well.

If you are in the Syracuse NY area next month, stop by for the boat show. Although many stink pots, last year, the show had many more sailboats.

Our club often helps the local sailboat vendors with setting up and manning booths.

Best,
Deric

Sorry to hear about your mom Sten. Best wishes for a complete and speedy recovery. I just got back from a month in Portland before Christmas(my daughter lives there) so I guess we just missed each other again. The coasti that you spoke with told you true, from what I have heard and seen, the bar near Cape Disapointment has folded up alot of boats, and not just bendy toys. Looks to me that if I ever move there (which is a possibility in the distant future) a swing keel is the way to go or keep the boat out on the coast. Maybe someplace like Newport.

All the best to your Mom Sten. I lost one Grandfather to a stroke, and another to heart surgery. At 16 I was told that I too have a very mild condition and that I will likely go the same way once my parts start wearing out and things are exacerbated.

Too bad the show was a letdown to you. I spent the weekend at our show (separate thread) and felt that things were definately lower key than last year. Rather than pushing sales and deals though, it seems like sellers here a looking for profit margins to make up their losses. Everything appeared more expensive. Of course I went on the first day of the show. It would be interesting to go back on the last day and see how much the deals change. I am toying with the idea of visiting Chicago at the end of the month...

Thanks for the kind words. Life is a bit hard at the moment - but progress is progress. Mom made her own dinner last night and is walking albeit slowly. Pretty good for a woman discovered 2.5 to 3 hours after her stroke.

So, single sailors of that genre - she is 63 - step up She was very happy once aboard my C25! Oh wait wrong site!

Back to the boat show stuff... I guess time will tell, but I think the boat industry is very sick. Now is a great time to buy a used cruiser and head out. I was surprised at the differences between shows - it was weird...
