Copacetic is good enough, I reckon. I also wondered about the bass response of the speakers with the volume of the hull behind them. Nothing a little batting inside the settees couldn't clear up. For added intelligibility, you might also want to mount some tiny tweeters up on the bulkhead, wired in parallel with the settee speakers, pointing into the cockpit.
For a deep bass, one could choose a larger speaker cone size,,, say 12 inches to 18 inches, or place a smaller speaker in a cabinet that can act as a resonator; thereby, producing the bass frequencies.
Try these: West Marine waterproof box speakers Model 1985944 at $54.99/pair. I mounted mine by forward bulkhead facing aft, and the sound was to the cockpit fine. They worked so well that I use another pair outside my house by the pool.

Either I am not an audiophile guy like some of you or I really just prefer the sound of wind and water while sailing but I do have a Sony receiver and 4 speakers-2 inside and 2 out- and am very happy with them. I did see that WM has a set on sale that even has aux jack for ipod. Steve A

I feel the same, but we sometimes use the Bose Ipod dock in the marina and the Eye TV on the Mac.
Dave, Ya when moored or anchored I might listen to background music but have never had a TV. I considered getting one of those portable DVD players but decided its against my (sailing) religion. Probably like you I sail to get away from all that noise and prefer the basics that sailing has to offer.
