As some one new, I would keep in mine 1 Not all are THAT computer savy!! 2 It's a web site for info, to help all, not just a few. 3 KISS; keep it simple Stupit.---not you, it's just a saying. thoughts from a newbe. D B .
I read some of the replies to the proposal made back January. I don't know if any of the proposals were approved or implemented. However, I trust these guys who are busy talking back and forth and posting regularly here to make the correct decision. I think as a group we are perfect, because so many of us come to take, yet all seem to be willing to give as well. Which is why I'm posting this morning. I lost the renewal notice I received earlier this year. And now I cannot find that I have paid my dues for this year and I don't know how to go about doing so. Except - post in the forum!
So I would say the email notification is a must! Web based payments and picture posting also.
<font face="Comic Sans MS"><font size="2"><font color="navy">In light of the current ways we have to communicate and interact, mostly on the forum, and with the Mainsheet having it’s limitations, the Tell Tales sitting passively in the members area what Paul has proposed could be a great way for the Association to serve many members and give individuals a voice (blogs, profiles, photos) that the forum isn’t designed for. I have been and am concerned that many here see the forum as the “Association” a more interactive web site could expand that to create an association that works in the world of the internet. Issues like making sure every paying member has notice of and access to officer elections still have to be carefully considered and at the moment that is only done through the Mainsheet. But having access to member’s profiles and a blog could go a long way towards having a larger base of leadership possibilities. IMO – We need much more than the forum to be an association and I whole heartedly support expanding the web site and the members ability to use it. </font id="navy"></font id="size2"></font id="Comic Sans MS">
Keep the forum as is. Concentrate on sailing the boats. All the web stuff is just a sideline not the focus. Stay on track.

The intention is to elevate the value of membership.
Here's a brief overview of the things it <b>'might'</b> include.

Note: I am a professional website programmer, online data systems are my speciality, I have developed e-commerce and online mgmt systems for a wide range of companies from small mom&pop sites to international corporations. Obviously there is a lot of work involved in a system like this and it's my intent that should I decide to proceed with the project, then I will make it a service that I will market to other associations.
Disclosure notice: The Assocation would in effect be the guinea pigs for this project. If I proceed with this project, I do intend to make it a profit center for my company.

As mentioned above, this is just a possibility! Your input is welcome.
Particularly we are insterested in additional features you would be interested in.
Back when I was an officer of the association one of the biggest things we tried to do was drive the value to the membership.
Now as a lurker and non member, my opinion is worth very little, but I'll throw this out there anyway.
1 - The forum attracts new members. Keeping it free for all is a good thing.(not that Paul mentioned otherwise)
2 - Image hosting would be a good thing. Storage is cheap, and members currently have to reference a file loaded elsewhere. However, upgrades to this forum application are fairly painless, 3rd party add on applications are prolific. I would be willing to bet that A. We aren't anywhere close to the current version and B that an application to allow for pic and movie uploads is available from either the current version of the software or from an add-on that was written by a third party and vetted by Snitz. 3. As long as the blog is available to be read by all, including non members it would be a good thing. Kept and written by members only would be fine, but it would need to be accesible by all - otherwise, what's the point of the blog. I know you mention that a member can set his/her access to this, but many times when time/money/skillset becomes an issue things like this get set aside until 1 or all of the three become available. Make sure this 4. Maintenance logs and Sail logs - stellar idea. ...
In general....good all the way around.
Having managed a prior upgrade two key things that come to mind are taking this one piece at a time and make sure someone can be there to handle issues and future upgrades.

I used to use "Geocache.com until it became a split "Public" and "Paid" site. You had to be a paying member to view some of the "Caches". What started as a great free site became a private paid site and I lost interest.
