We're hoping to be able to have past commodore Bill Meinert sail with us on Valentines day (you've got to love it!)
Is there any special protocol to follow when you have a past commodore aboard? (flags, pipe at the gangway, dress code, posting on daily orders, drinks cabinet contents, etc.)
Bill will be down here for a break from Chicago (why?) and we hope to meet up at the Miami Strictly sail boat show the day before the sail.
I sailed with a past Commodore once last year. Here's the protocol: 1. You must have available several freshly dry-cleaned and pressed Commodore uniforms. 2. You must fly the Commodore Burgee in port when the Commodore is aboard. 3. You must learn to salute correctly every time you approach him.
...nah, forget all that!!! Just bring the beer and keep the Commodore happy.
Here's how to use your bosun's pipe. You'll need sideboys when you pipe him aboard, remember, nobody in the piping ceremony salutes, only the Officer of the Deck while being asked permission to come aboard. Sharply raise his pendant to the port spreader unless he's taking command, otherwise starboard (I'm a little fuzzy on these details, I've been out of the USN for more than two decades) and pass the word "Commodore Meinert, arriving" on the 1MC. After the pomp & circumstance is when to ask him if he brought any beer. At a minimum, you should have grog available (this goes outside my experience, the USN is a dry navy, but the Brits & Aussies knew how to do it up).
I met and sailed against Bill at the Nationals in Cleaveland. A beer and chips kind of guy who would not stand on protocol..... except for a hand shake and a howdy-do. If you haven't had the pleasure you will have a good time and, if sailing, come away with more knowledge then when you first met. Retired navy I bleieve....but you can't hold that against him.
