This is the long haul- 5 weeks! On the other topic David has posted the start as 9pm PST Friday the 13th (tonight!) and I'm totally trusting his math.

I noticed in the briefing email there's inter-group competition, I was wondering if our wonderful and fearless group leader would want to get us in that and post our results??

Good luck everyone!

Avocado out.

I just checked the site to verify the start time. It says roughly 13 hours from now (0755 PST), which still makes it 2100 PST this evening.

Regarding the intergroup competition, I'll look into it & see what's involved.

Now you are aware that I'm going to beat all of you on this leg?

Oh wait, that's what I said the last time.

Nevermind.

Oh no! not another few weeks of sleepless nights, early dawns to check the winds and of course... watching the crew go downhill as the leg proceeds.

Can't wait!

I've just added Sparky's Beotch, Valcour, & Labyrinth to our group, and I only know who one of them is. Can the owners of the other two let us know who we're racing against?

Just in case anyone did not notice them. there are 3 gates south of the highlighted track, I believe that we all have to pass them to stbd (well off course, so should not be an issue)

Haven't seen the gates, but managed to "find" a very small uncharted island. Crunch.
<s>(Well, it shows up at max zoom, but not before then)</s>
Edit: Guess it did show up on the map, not sure how I missed that!

Third place,(Within our Group) not bad. What are the odds I can go through the panama canal without the game resetting and screwing everyone up?

Day 2 Update:

After two weeks loafing around in Qindgao we are glad to be back at sea. This is a long leg, Qindgao to Rio de Janeiro and no 'planned' stops between.

First obstacle was a group of islands south of the western tip of Japan. These islands are along the ridge that forms Japan, Taiwan and the philippines, now past this ridge, the ocean is much deeper and we can expect some wild changes in conditions as we're pretty much out of the way of any land now.

So the crew is slipping in to their regular routine of 5am and 5pm course corrections with constant lookout for the rest of the group. No mishaps on board (thank goodness, the crew is temperamental at best) and they have pretty much gotten over leaving port on valentines day.

A couple of things to think about.. the head!
We're on a nearly 5 week trip here, and 10 crew on board even on the meager rations I can afford, we're going to make quite an impact on the holding tank. Assuming we don't flush it overboard (? is it legal out here ?) that's about 350, <i>ahem</i>, 'dumps' Sure hope the flush valve works well!

<i>No! it's not ok to scrape the potato peels into the head!</i>

Sorry about that, crew interrupting important blogging notes!

Ok, get back to your chores and don't forget to eat your citrus fruits, don't want no scurvy on-board JD!

Later.

Well, after getting down to 1144th place(leading the Cat Group) around 5PM this evening I'm now steadily sliding backwards. At 11:08 CST I'm down to 3483rd and losing about 75-90 spots every ten minutes. I'm sticking to my current plan as we have another 4-1/2 weeks and anything can happen in that time frame.

I'm loosing track of owner/boat names.

Most of the pack seem to be heading for the southwest side of the course, reluctantly I'm that side too, but I don't want to go too far outside the line. I keep tweaking my course so that I'm not straying too far.

Now when I check my position, I check all sail configurations. A couple of times I found that Code Zero was not my best sail, especially in high winds. Don't see much spinny use for the next few days.

Labyrinth is my GF, Sarah ( Admiral, Commodore, Chairman Meow ) and she is a GREAT sailor and a fierce competitor. I'm hoping she will chime in soon, as well as join up, sign on and become another excellent contributor.

She is quite an interesting personality with a most unique perspective!

IMHO

This time they put it in the SI's so you'll get the DSQ.

VMG off the wind is a tough nut to crack.

I'm on the N side of the line and hit light winds. I've dropped about 18k places since 2100MT last night.
First we run aground, now this. I think I need a word with my Navigator!

Well after going away for the weekend to a place that had wifi which for some reason wouldn't work on my computer, I find myself better off than I'd feared. I somehow managed to get through that group of islands between two that appeared close enough to touch with one hand and an eased boom...but I also, for better or worse, find myself committed to go south. So onward to the roar'n 40's! I noticed many leaders heading North- not sure of the strategy there, will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Woohoo! Since Lard Butt is unlikely to remain in this leading position for long or be anywhere near it in the entire race again, I'm here to enjoy my 15 minutes!

Something happened overnight!

We were steadly making up placement when the port watch took over last night. Tedium has settled in a bit over the past few days, hardly a challange, just keep the boat going and try to find the gaps amoungst the thousands of other boats.

The crew has pretty much gotten over valentines day, and even took time out last night to watch a movie, like I said, Tedium.

As dawn brok this morning, we're far from land so only the sun on the horizon hits the internal compass that early. Pretty much on ths same course as last night... wait a minute! what about the course changes! Missed them! Lost 20,000 places overnight.

I'm ready to ditch this crew! Maybe in Rio!

Stay safe!

Paul
