I got a Magma "Party" size grill (17") for Christmas. Before I unbox it I want to check if others are using this size vs the "Original" size of 15". I recently saw both at a WM and noted that the larger unit, though only 2" wider and 2" higher, seems a lot larger than the 15" model. I'm concerned the larger size may seem too big for this boat. Anyone have the larger unit?
We cannot direct the winds but we can adjust our sails.
I have the 17" but could live with the 15". If it was permentantly mounted then yeah it will look a bit big. In my case I dismount it after every use (put it in a garbage bag and then the orginal box). If I were to redo my purchase I would go with the 15". The 17" is a little to wide when heating water and pans.

You'll really appreciate the difference. We had the 15 on the C25, the 17 on our C34. Because they're round they're a bit harder to cook on than a rectangular. I don't think it'll look out of place or too big. One suggestion the Admiral had for the next time we do our sunbrella covers: use gray instead of the standard boat sunbrella covers (our is the regular see-it-all-the-time blue), then it'll kinda disappear visually. Even if the rest of your stuff is one color, the gray won't affect it or look out of place.
Amazingly, not at all. I think it`s because it gets so hot that all the grease just evaporates. In the beginning I used to clean it up to the original shine (inside and out). Now I don`t and all I have is maybe a darker coloring in the middle bottom section. I run it pretty hot then slap on the burgers. When the burgers are done I shut it down. Now I just clean it with Oven Cleaner once a season. Once you're done let it run hot until you see no more smoke. Very impressive when under a blow, I never got the flame to go out on me. I`ve never used the cabin stove since I got that.
I think we got the same unit. I have a hinged lid and a red button to light it up. Mine is the West Marine branded one, but made by Magma. Eating the burgers is plenty of time to let the unit cool down so you can store it.
Quite easy to dismount: Half a turn on the bottle and its off. Unscrew the pipe that connects underneath, then unscrew the whole unit off its mount. Takes < 1 min. I rather have it inside when not in use due to theft and that it looks like a big stailess radar thing.
I mounted mine right in the middle Aft. That would be behind your NautiDuck Capitan Seat. Never been in the way. What is really nice is when cooking you sit in one of the catbird seats, beer in one hand and BBQ tweezers in the other and things are all good in this world.

I too have the 17 and love it. I don't think its too big and use every sq inch. Even though I have the sunbrella cover, I remove it after use. Although I am in a very safe marina, I am, like Steve, concerned about theft. Many do leave it on the boat permanently. And I have a high deductible on my insurance. Could I live with the 15, sure but I would probably starve while feeding others waiting for my meal to cook. Steve A
We cover 'em because ss rusts. The Magmas get a brownish tinge. Magma just came out with a ss cleaner, think I read about it in Good Old Boat. Plus, the canvas cover keeps the lid from falling off - ours is a late 1980s model, maybe newer ones have a different lid.
I had the magma for years, Hated the thing. Could never keep it lit in any kind of a breeze and you don't have much control over the heat. I ended up giving it away but kept the mount, went to K-Mart and bought a $25 table top grill and mounted it on the Magma mount. Best thing I ever did. You can cook on this in a hurricane and at $25 I can buy a lot of them for the price of the Magma. This one is three years old in the photo and I'm in salt water. I do cover it with an outboard motor cover and store it in the boat when not in use.
