I have a boat (250-wing #411) that needs the pop-top bar. I think I can make one, but need the demensions.. Can any one help a Nebraska sailor?? Dave B. ____________________/)_____________/)_________/))))__________.
You mean the "U" shaped tube that holds up the poptop "tent" I assume. It is probably 1" but I wont be at my boat for a week or so. Paul (Britinusa) has his boat at his house as does Tom Potter, so they will probably get the information to you fairly soon. I bet if you called Catalina Yachts that they sell the part.
Welcome to the Association! I hope you decide to become part of the community.
Dave; My boat didn't come with the pop top enclosure, so we made one. I made the support out of PVC pipe probably 1/2", with 90 degree elbows. I reinforced the upper section of pipe by inserting a wooden dowel. The result looks good, and can be knocked down into three pieces for storage.
Yes, thay have the part, But sometimes you just need to do it your self. It's just a bar. I,ve got $2.58 in some PVC as of now, If it works, fine, if not, I'll buy the part. But I would like to try. But thanks for your help. Dave B.
You may wish to use this illustration as a guide to fabricate your own pop-top support structure. Unfortunately I'm away from the boat and won't be able to provide you with dimensional information...
Henk, Well, I did'nt know that two bar's were needed, I only have holes for one. But It's only March, so when ever some one gets to there boat, and has time to size it up, that will work for me. Nice photo by the way. Now is that the normal set up with the screens?? Or is this a photo of something you've done?? DAve B. ______________/)_____________/)______________/)))______________
Dave... the forward bow in Henk's picture is not stock. I think he made it because he prefers to keep the pop top deck closed while using the all weather enclosure. I don't recall the reason but it might be that it makes it easy to lock the boat while away from it without taking down the enclosure. We'll see what he has to say.
Seems like it had something to do with being able to keep the poptop open all the time, but I don't recall exactly. I know he either made it himself or had it custom made. The stock one is just the single inverted-U-shaped hoop that fits into the two holes in your track. I'm also not near my boat, so I can't give you dimensions either. Someone will come up with them, or contact Catalina in FL, or a dealer.
Thank you Arlyn... it was a fun project and took a bit of time to think it through and make it work. We're happy with the results.
Purpose: While in port to be able to have the pop-top up and still be able to lock the hatch. The image shows a custom-made forward pop-top SS support frame with about 2" long angle feet allowing it to rest on deck next to the hatch opening. In order to store this when not in use the forward angled support is detachable and held in place with a simple pin. Keep in mind that the hatch swing legs need to shortened by about 1.5 inch to accommodate the support. The SS tubes are, I believe, 7/8 OD
The forward support frame installed and allowing the hatch to travel freely below it. There is some tension on the frame to make sure it won't slip off the the side deck-rail. The angle feet are offset to line the frame up with the pop-top canvas between the windows. As an added bonus we noticed that when leaving the pop-top up for a longer time there is no moisture forming between the open hatch and the inside canvas of the pop-top
2) Keeping flies/bugs/mosquitoes/no-see-um's out of the cabin during all kinds of late spring early summer Ontario weather is not a luxury. Johanna came up with this very simple and wonderful way to use the same bug screen horizontal as well as vertical, in the hatch or on the pop-top. When not in use it will store into a small compact, easy to store roll. The screen material is Velcro'd onto the plastic supporting doorstops. The hatch insert idea was suggested earlier by Gerry Mulvihill to use 3/8 round dowels and plastic tubing corners
Hang in there Dave. Someone will get you the dimensions. Most of us have our boats stored somewhere away from home and all tarped over. If no one else chimes in I will be at the boat next weekend (3/28) and will take photos and get the dimensions.
In the meantime you can order the parts to do this mod for storing the poptop support.
I thank you. That's just what I needed. Now I can build one. I like your Web page. Just A little info.I see By your web page that you were at Lake Pleasant AZ. Thats were my boat #411 came from. Once more thank you. Dave B.
