Nauti Duck has a new mast track and padeye so it's gonna be whisker pole time!

We cannot direct the winds but we can adjust our sails.

Randy, nice job. Did you have to drill 2 new holes. I assume payeye slides.
Steve A
PS what you doing with the "old" mast track?

Seven new holes - drilled and tapped for 1/4" bolts. The boat had no mast padeye previously. The PO did not use a whisker pole.

Nice. Are you installing end stops?

Good eyes! I wasn't going to but then, when demoing the rail car to the Admiral, I promptly ran the car off the end of the rail and the plastic slide inserts nearly went overboard. She asked if we should have stops.

I'm ordering them today.

Can't you just make the top and bottom bolts stand a bit proud?

Less holes in the stick is better!

I'll be adding a track to JD soon too. Thanks for the tips Randy.

Paul, FYI I mounted the track 2" from the deck. Most people have their fixed padeyes around 35-36" from the deck so this gives me adjustability both up and down.

Not only do the ends stops prevent losing hardware, they smooth out the 90 degree corners of the track thereby reducing a sail/sheet chafe point.

Yikes, I need to be more careful with the keyboard. Yes, John, it is 2' off the base! Don, good point about the potential for abrasion to the sail. I will put some duct tape on the ends until the stops arrive. Thanks for the tip.

Dumb question - why not send the stuff back to westmarine, and simply buy a mittful of washers - on each of the end screws, you could put 3 or 4 washers in and still hold the track snugly against the mast. No need for end stops at all.

If you coated the works with some liquid plastic or similar, there would be little chance of sail damage, although I can't see how a sail would get in there to snag anyhow.

Paul, that is the boat pole that is mounted to the catbird seat rail and the stanchion. The whisker pole is mounted to the starboard bow pulpit and mid stanchion.

I prefer to use purpose-specific parts for this sort of thing - the end caps. Since the genny is a 135 it can reach the mast when tacking and gybing and could be abraded by the sharp edges at both ends of the track.

Paul, here are a few photos of the boat pole mount.

The pole sits just above the port lifeline:

The mount at the catbird seat:

The mount at the fore-cockpit stanchion:

I like having the pole in the cockpit within easy reach.

Randy, is that the CD heavy duty track?
This one: http://www.catalinadirect.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=608

I had information today that the CD track is 4 feet, but I`m not sure anymore looking at your picture.

Used this setup last season and it worked fine.

From the data on the respective websites the Catalina Direct kit seems like a stronger setup for about $18 more. How are the two kits on proper fit and function ? Is the car a good fit to the rail ? Does the car latch work easily ?

Can't speak for the CD kit but the Ronstan car works very nicely on the Schaeffer rail. The Ronstan car has two plasic inserts that help it move along the rail easily. The car stop mechanism is firm and reliable.

Nicely done Randy. This is on my list, but down a ways. First have to get/make a new tiller, and replace our head. I did manage to mount my spinnaker pole between two stanchions similar to how you've got your boat pole. I'm thinking I like that arrangement. We've got two poles, one for Rita to grab a cleat with and another to fend off of our neighbor's boat when the sailing gods are being extra humorous. Currently they're always either in the cabin or under foot, up along the stanchions seems like a good idea.
