Gents,

I want to pick up a Whisker Pole before the summer gets rolling but after doing some reading, seems that while Forespar recommends the HD6-12, others seem to think that it's too heavy in general for the Catalina 25 and that the ADJ6-12 is a better choice, even though it would seem to be slightly under-built for the job. Any advice? Would be using it with my working Jib or 135 Genoa.

Thanks!
Mike

There is another thread on this topic, several months old. Depends on the air you sail in mostly and what sails you have. The "6-12" length pole, fully extended, is appropriate for the working jib and maybe a 135 genoa. It is definitely too short for use with a 150 genoa. You can't push the clew out far enough. The ADJ6-12 is a reasonable pole for the working jib, in light air only. I've seen that pole as standard fare on C-22's and it works with the c-22's 150, and I've raced with a guy who used one on his Capri 26 in club races, again in light air only. Personally, I think that the ADJ6-12 is too flimsy in heavier air; it will bend a lot. I own a ADJ6-12HD that I use on our C-22 when racing and used it with the working jib on the C-25 until I bought the next size up, ADJ7-15. It is a 3-section pole and is long enough for the 150. The downside is that it is much more expensive, about $435 from Defender. My actual cost and purchase story is on another thread.

I have also gone the route of making my own pole for the C-22, but that is another story.

Mike,

I've used the ADJ6-12 on my 150, then my 135 after I had the 150 cut down, and on several occasions, on my asymetric cruising spinnaker. No problem. The pole held up fine.

This year I intend adapting it as a sprit for my asym. Just a trial to see how the deck set-up will work out. If it works out I will be purchasing the tubing and ends for a sprit.

Thanks for the input gents! Think I'm gonna give the ADJ6-12 a shot. Don't plan on using it in heavy air and I think the reduced size and weight will be a major plus.

Cheers,
Mike
