<font face="Comic Sans MS"><font size="2"><font color="navy">I just ordered the 3 spring motor mount from Catalina Direct. I am considering using 3/8" starboard or PVC to stiffen the transom on the outside. I intend to get a Tohatsu 9.8hp - 25" (<i>with our MEMBER DISCOUNT</i>) to go on it soon. A few questions; 1 - Are there clearance issues with the motor on this mount, i.e. will the motor fully tilt up and clear the railing? Is the 3/8" spacer enough?
2 - What if anything did you do inside the boat to stiffen the transom?
3 - Any other considerations with this motor and mount combo?
4 - Is the Nissan worth the extra boat unit?
Any and all suggestions are welcome as it is a major expenditure. TIA </font id="navy"></font id="size2"></font id="Comic Sans MS">
I put a 3/8" piece of starboard on the outside and another on the inside essentially sandwiching the transom. I also put a 1/8" thick stainless steel piece inside for the nut heads to press against rather then using washers. I had it around anyway. All that being said, the transom on my 78 was a full inch thick and I would not doubt you could get away using nothing but the outside piece is rather simple to do and does beef it up quite a bit.
On our 250, I used a 3/8" or so piece of UHMW cutting board on the exterior, and two 1/4" x 2" x 12" or so aluminum straps horizontally to back up the bolts on the interior and spread the load. The hull was about 1-1/2" thick at the bottom, but only 3/8" or so at the top. If you search back you'll find a complete write up I did on the whole procedure. Sorry about the shrinking violet pictures, it's something I didn't know Shutterfly did, I'll be changing to another picture server in the future.
The Nissan is identical other than cosmetics to the Tohatsu, no reason for the extra cost unless you're a die hard Nissan fan.
I tested the clearance on ours by borrowing the strong back of our neighbor's kid so we could raise it up all the way, hold it up to the transom, then lower it all the way & do the same. For our boat, the 3/8" UHMW board was more than enough, but YMMV on a 25 using a different mount than I did.
I used 1/2" starboard on the outside and 1/4" starboard on the inside and used the bolts, washers, and nuts that came with the mount. Pics show a 5 hp merc, but we now have a Nissan 9.8 elec start 25" shaft. wiring goes thru the clamshell vent, very snug.
THe o/b's wiring comes into the boat thru the clamshell vent, installed by a PO, and attaches under the shelf to extension wires running from that area under the quarterberth directly to the battery.
A few years ago, I installed the 4-spring model (Garhauer) from Catalina Direct. I had no issues with the stern rail clearance. I used a piece of starboard on the outside but i forget the thickness...maybe 1/4". I then mounted my solar panel off the stern rail above the motor. The mounts are high enough that I can take the motor off without removing the panel.
Peregrine, Check out kitchen cutting boards at Sam's Club for a backing board. Material is similar to starboard and I hear it is much cheaper, partly because the amount of material is less (with starboard, the minimum size board you have to buy is often much more than you need.C
Good point. Ikea has three-packs of UHMW cutting boards for next to nothing. Last time I was there, I bought one pack for Rita & two for me so I've got lots of extra UHMW plastic in the shop for projects, plus I'll eventually inherit the ones in the kitchen as they become worn. They're still good for runners or what not.
<font face="Comic Sans MS"><font size="2">Thanks for all the info. I just ordered a new Tohatsu 9.8hp (25") to go on the mount from On Line Outboards. <font size="3"><b>Love that member discount!</b></font id="size3"> Worth 3+ years of dues.
Can't wait to splash, should be ready to go 1st of May. Thanks agan </font id="size2"><font color="navy"></font id="navy"></font id="Comic Sans MS">
