Hi Everyone,

We're going to keep our boat on a mooring this year (rather than at a traditional dock or slip), so it looks like I should have a swivel on the lines.

I'm looking at this 5/8" pin model with a 4,750 lb working load limit (WLL) from Defender.com:

Mooring Swivel, 5/8"
316 Stainless steel
Item #: 551162
Manufacturer: SUNCOR
Model #: S0156-0016
Shipping Weight: 2.55 Lbs.
List Price: $101.16
Our Price: $49.99

(<i>cut-and-past into your browser:</i> <b>http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1|10391|638271|34760&id=142883</b> <i>I've tried to place a link to this item, but something's not working quite right.</i>)

However, I have NO idea whether this is too big, too small, or "just right". It "looks" too big, but I'll have a neighbor at the same marina that's using a 1/2" swivel (2,640 WLL) for their Catalina 22.

Any suggestions?

Anyone else using a similar swivel? If so, what size are you using?

Thanks!

Martin

Wow, going first class with the stainless! Where are you located? If this is an inland lake, galvanized can last many years and is much cheaper (sorry Randy). I used my mooring chain for 3 years with little wear. It is pulled in the winter and I drop it in a bucket and spray it with oil. Has stayed almost new for this long.

Also, Swivels are needed throughout the chain. I used one near the anchor, one near the ball, and two more along the chain. It will still get wound up, but works very well most of the time. I use a double bridle to the 2 cleats on the bow. About 10 feet long.

Use the same size swivel as the thickness of your links in your chain. I start out with very thick chain at the anchor and switch to a smaller link half way up. Don't ask me the size right now, it's too early!

It is OK to use galvanized for underwater applications but a proper yachtman would use stainless where people can see it.
