As we all know sometimes the most simple problems end up being the most difficult to overcome. Last season I had a pesky forward hatch leak. Never too bad mind you but in a heavy rain it would leak. I decided to replace the gasket with a self stick closed cell foam stripping that I picked up at a Marina store along the C & D canal. Upon the installation of the new gasket the leak became dramatically worse. By then the boat was up on the hard, the weather was cold and I felt that due to the cold nothing would stick properly so I covered the hatch with a tarp and waited for spring. According to Catalina Direct the proper material for this application is a gasket that fits into a groove (the gasket is shaped roughly like a keyhole). My hatch has no such groove. Does anyone out there know the dimensions of their gasket material? I think that the stock that I chose may have bee too thick. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Joe
Joe, I have a 1999 250 wing, with no gasket. Like you, if there's a gasket that goes on the Fwd. hatch I as well would like to know. Just today I went to the hardware store and picked up some weather stripping and put it on the hatch it self. I know its not right, but lets see if some one can come up with the correct part. Our 2000WK has a gasket on the hatch. It is glued to the opening part of the hatch. It had been coming loose and I looked for replacement but couldn't find anything like it. So, I re-glued the sections of the gasket that had let loose. Next time we are out at the boat I'll take a picture.
I just ordered a roll of white generic self-stick gasket material from Catalina Direct (it is on back order...just my luck) They state that it is good for all hatches and seat lockers that Catalina has made. (Big Promise!) They further state that it is of slightly different dimensions than their previous product which had a tendency to lean over after awhile thus causing it to get crimped. The new stuff is 5/8" x 3/4". They said to expect a two week delay...when it arrives I'll let you know how it works. My launch is set in concrete for 4/10...very wet concrete I believe. We had some heavy rain last night and I got very little water so I'm not about to touch the hatch until new material arrives.
The forward hatch on my '97 used to leak when on the hard. The boat has to sit exactly on her lines to get the forward hatch to drain into the anchor locker and the companionway hatch to drain into the cockpit. When my marina hauls my boat it usually gets blocked up with a slight slope aft. Consequently, rain water would collect around the aft edge of the forward hatch and seep inside.
What I assume was the original weather seal looked like the same self-stick weather stripping you can buy at Home Depot. The original weather strip was coming off and it didn't fill the gap under the hatch cover anyway. I used a pencil to mark where the old weather strip was, then removed it and cleaned the hatch surface. I replaced it with 1/2 inch wide by 3/8 thick weather strip bought at Home Depot or Lowes. Then I stuck a second strip over the first - making it twice as thick. This filled the gap under the hatch and I haven't had a leak since. It's been a couple of years.
