Just a heads up!

We will be relocating the website to new servers in the next couple of days.

Just prior to this event, we will lock all the forums in order to backup the data.

Don't panic!

The plan is to complete the mover either Monday night or Wednesday night.

By locking the forums, we ensure that all data is transferred.

Stay tuned.

Paul

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the work and notice.
If you are able to provide the information. I am curious, "what benefit(s) will the upgrade provide?"

Are the new servers faster CPU?
Greater hard drive space?
Is the web server changing i.e., IIS to Apache?
Redundancy built in? Raid 5?

I enjoy the association and the folks who make it succeed. I often site this community when talking to others in the public education sector when defining and describing a "professional learning community."

Best,
Deric

The site will look the same after the transfer.

We'll have greater hard drive space but we're nowhere near using it.

The forum is IIS (asp) based so it's staying that way. (The new membership area, under development) will be apache (linux).

The site will be on a data center system, we won't notice if it's raid or not. (we're nowhere near that level of usage.)

The primary reason for moving is availablity of tech support, we'll have 24/7/365 phone support vs not a lot.

Oh, and we'll have 2 domains (one IIS the other linux/apache) for less than 50% of the cost.

We'll have better stats that give greater detail on usage/abusage.

Plan is to shift Wednesday evening... stay tunted.

Paul

THANK YOU for the work. It is a pleasure it is to talk to everyone like this, and it sure takes the willies out of many of the things I do on boats to be able to ask a group if something is shipshape or not.

Paul is doing a great job, not only Web Master but also the elected Secretary. Both 2 of the highest workload positions (along with Treasurer).

In case you're curious:
IIS (<b>I</b>nternet <b>I</b>nformation <b>S</b>ervice). A Windows based web server.
ASP (<b>A</b>ctive <b>S</b>erver <b>P</b>ages). A Windows based way of serving content on webservers that lets you easily interact with your customers/users.

LINUX is an open source (meaning anyone can modify it) operating system, that does the same thing your Windows OS (98/2000/XP/Vista, etc) or Max OSX does, just in a different way (extreme generalization, SlashDotters need not correct me). If you don't like how it does something, simply change it, recompile & run your version. You can't do this on Windows or MAC, again a generaliztion.

Apache is a LINUX based (in this case, there are any number of variants) web server that does things similar to (Windows based) IIS, but again, in a different way.

That Paul is able to weave all these together to make them work gives you some idea of his expertise.
