Hmm, well I think for now I would prefer the comfort of a tall cockpit since I'm 6'1". The 86 I was looking at was sold over the weekend after months on the market. :( I don't see anything else out there right now. Hopefully one will pop up in the next 2 months.
I have an '89 tall rig. I'm about 5'10" and when sitting in the cockpit, my head has never been in contact with the boom. However, for those considering installing a dodger or bimini, it is an extremely tight fit to have the cover at a decent height and yet clear the boom. On the '89, the boom is fixed to the mast and so you cannot raise the boom a bit to get extra clearance. I believe older catalina TRs may not have the boom fixed and so it may be possible to raise it slightly if really wanting to squeeze a bimini under the boom and have it be at a decent height for most that are shorter than say 5'8". If not considering a dodger or bimini, I would check and see if the boom height is of any concern. The TR is fine for me and so far for every guest that has been onboard.
Click on the left-hand picture in my signature to see a bimini under a standard rig boom, with the topping lift adjusted to barely go slack when the sail is hoisted. At 5'9" I tipped my head a little to walk under it. A tall rig bimini would be 10-12" lower.
