Getting Name on Boat

The admiral is pushing to get the new name on the boat before it hits the water this year. Need some help in what is the best deal in boat labels and how quick can I get it?

DO NOT go to a "boat" graphics place. "Boat Graphics" equals 3-5 times the price.
There are only two company's that make vinyl letters 3M is the most widely used.
Pick a color, a font and the size. Oh yeah and where you are going to place it.
IMO try not to get too cute, too big or overly ornate.
The trick is getting it level to to the water line. Measure twice then measure again.

Also for size I went with 8" high font as suggested on this forum. I regret going this big now, imbalanced for our boats, 6" is plenty.

Steve,

I measured one at our club that was 9 inches. I thought it might be alright since they were not all capital letters. I agree if i did all caps like yours.

Wow Steve! You're really making a statement with those letters. The name on my boat is only 2.5 ft. long.

Looks like you where having fun in that picture getting her ready. I get my boat ready in the front drive. My friends come from miles around to see the boat in the drive. None have yet picked up a bottle of wax and a rag!

We used [url="http://www.overtons.com/lettering/custom_vinyl_lettering.shtml"]Overton's[/url] for our lettering. The letters are 6" and the total length is 44". Their site is easy to use and shows you what your name will look like with the various fonts and sizes. Total cost for both sides was $59.22 and the material came with good directions and was easy to apply.

We used Tap Plastics. We designed our lettering and shadows and font and colors with the Word word processor and put it on a floppy disk and brought it to them. They made it in less than a day.

Was there some sort of explosion in your yard just before you took your photo? Looks like some 2x4's met their maker in a bad way.

I think our lettering cost us in the neighborhood of $100, don't really recall. Through a place called Instant Signs. I created the lettering on my computer, chose the font, and basically told them what I wanted. I was originally going to do them in 12" letters, but they had a display at the other end of their layout room, and 12" was way too big, so I chose 9". I don't regret the decision, but we could have easily gone with 6" and I think I'd still be happy.

On "This Side Up" the lettering is 8" high and 57" long. I paid $40 for both from American Graphics - a franchise you could probably find close to you. They made them in a day.

Thanks for the help and the information on the discount. Just ordered my new boat name 9 inches tall and 49 inches long. Below is how it will look. I went out and measured and this will cover the ghost image from the prior name.

The total cost was just over $63 with discount.

Looks good Chris, You will get an E-Mail tomorrow saying that your order is compleate and shipped. They are in NJ. so you should have them sometime this week. I'm in NY so it was only about 3 days for me. My name is 8" all in lower case so only some of the letters are 8", The rest are about 5". I also made up another small set to replace the broken "Catalina 25" on the coamings.

I think replacing the logo with a graphic is a good idea but OJ, Steve Madsen, made black plastic [url="http://www.catalina-capri-25s.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=14726&SearchTerms=logo"]replacement logos.[/url]
I'm not sure he's still around but I bought a pair and they look like the originals except they are black through out, the originals were black on a white back ground.
I just e-mailed him and will let you know if I get an answer.

Chris, The font is "Airstream" The main color is dark blue with a small Red boarder You can play with the colors to match you boat. It is 1.5" tall, 8.41" long. Since you used the 50% promo, you can try GL500E for 10% off. They will E-Mail you discount codes that is why I have all of these.

LOL! I just finished with the bottom restoration with the new VC-17. What a job that was! The planks were used to raise the boat off its bunks, so as I was lowering it back I was just throwing them anywhere.

That's correct, the font choice makes a big difference. Mine are all caps so I should`ve went with 6". A font with fancy curls probably would look very good at 8". I think mine looks a little too commercial but then again it makes the boat seem fast too. (and I strongly emphasise the work "seem"). Looks kinda cool and modern once in the water though.

Agree with the above - Assuming you have already chosen your Name, go with a font that is easily read, and letters big enough to be seen through binocs when you are in distress, and a powerboater only knows that its a sailboat he's looking for.

Using a program like "Corel Draw" or any graphics program you can test-fit lettering to see how it will look.

We got our lettering in 2 sizes - one for the sides and one for the transom. Since the Boat's name is only 4 letters long (a factor in naming for us) and since 2 of th eletters ar I's (happy coincidence) we could go huge, and not take up a load of real-estate.

Another thing to consider is where your fenders will rub. A couple of boats in our marina have erased part of their name due to fender rub. I also thing sloppy application was part of the problem, but hey, whatever.

For the lettering we contacted a locat automobile graphics guy who did a the full set (Name X3, Hailing Port, Registration numbers X2) for us for a very reasonable price. I think it was in the $60 range. Don't remember anymore, but I know it is posted on here in a previous thread someplace.

If I recall, I think my boat name is 6". Since it's not all caps, 8" might be a little better, but I think it's fine. From an aft view it looks good, but it looks a little small from a more forward angle.

We cut between the pin striping to get the name up a little higher and we used the same colors as the striping in a shadow effect. We like the look of it.
