After being surprised by a larger increase in marina fees associated with getting my boat off the hard than expected, I am now experiencing deep trailer envy. I had to delay launching for a week and now my family must live off beans! As I do not have the units for buying a new custom trailer, is there any suggestions for paying to have an older trailer modified to fit the 250 with the wing keel? Also, are there any true trailer sailors out there with the wing keel? Is it a bear to get in and out of the water?
I assume you have already exhausted looking to borrow or rent one at your marina. Have you tried Craigslist? Wish I was closer, I'd let you use ours. Maybe there's a member here not too far away from you who can help, with the proper incentive.
I trailer launch our wing keel 250 using an 80' strap. It is not hard to do but our club has a looong ramp with a dock right along side of it. We only do this launch/retrieve once a year. If you are routinely trailer-sailing then I think it would get old.
Having trailered my 250 WK from Raleigh, NC to Columbia, SC and gone through one launch and a couple of mast raising/lowering cycles I could not tolerate doing that more than a couple of times per year. I would consider trailering a water ballasted 25 footer or a much lighter keel boat. For two years I kept a water ballasted MacGregor 26-D on its trailer with the mast always up. It was parked in a boat yard 100 feet or so from a ramp with no power lines between the parking spot and the ramp. That was much better than taking the boat home every time.
