Next week I leave for two weeks in St. Pete. I got to thinking, while I'm there, I'll go to the SPYC snd look at all the boats at hte dock. I'll check out the boats as they pass the condo we rent of Boca Ciega Bay.
This got me thinking. In the Power Squadron we have "harbor pilots" who sign up for various locations. You can call them and get all sorts of local information.
What if we had a way to identify sailors who were willing to take on an extra passenger for a ride -IF THEY SUPPLIED THE BEER.
i'd imagine lots of us travel around on a somewhat regular basis. It could be a great way to meet others in the group.
I don't know whether this is a brilliant idea or not but I would be willing to put my name on the list. I know Indianapolis is not the most exciting place in the world, but you'll probably find yourself here some time. Any thoughts?

Ed, I just got back from Seattle and hooked up with one of our members there who took me out in his C250 for one of the best days of sailing I have ever had. I have also taken several members out in PiSeas II-I am in SoCal. Usually if someone is going out of town, they post a notice in the forum asking members in that area to get together. Just another great reason to join this Association. Steve A
In th eowner's list it identifies where everyone is at. There is a mapping thing out there that interfaces with google. I forget what its called, but it lets everyone plunk in their locale.
Going up I-5 to the Puget Sound? Then stop by our place in Eugene for a good meal and/or a place to stop for the night. We can go sailing or just shoot the breeze.
What a coincidence. I did just that. A few years ago I was stuck in Portland and Kevin McKenzie was gracious enough to take me out sailing on his 250. I took him and his wife out to dinner after the sail and we had a great time. It was really nice for a member to take me out when I was out of town instead of sitting in a hotel room. It was great meeting a member of the group.
Second coincidence, I'm sitting in Indianapolis right now. I'm sitting right across from the Lucas Oil Stadium,? I suppose they play football there? What beer do you drink Ed? Dan
I can attest to Commodore Jim's hospitality--I was stuck in San Diego over a weekend, and he took me out. After we got the fire extinguished about ten miles from Mission Bay, we had an uneventful return trip home, and I took Karen and him out for sushi. (What's a little smoke billowing out of the galley and the sail locker? )
Rita & I are more than willing to take folks out for a sail on SL if you're going to be in the Seattle area. We've had occasion to take out Kevin Mackenzie (Dogs Allowed) & Steve Auerbach (Piseas II) thus far and enjoyed both trips. We're not that close to I-5 if you're transiting the area, but we've got a spare room as well, and both of us are pretty good cooks.
Pearl is (will be on thursday) in Port Clinton, that is between Sanduskey and Toledo, Ohio. I live 3 hours away, but I'm up there a lot and it would be worth an email if you're in the area. And there is always Pensacola, Fl. from mid January to mid March. I agree that perhaps posting a list on the forum would be helpful.
Dan: Just read your e-mail. I don't know how long you'll be here. I have a meeting tomorrow through about 6:30 and am free Thursday til a 7:oo power squadron class I have to teach. If you're going to be around, give me a call. My cell is 317-657-1274. Ed
Did I hear Beer?! Hey Ed, I'm just south of St Pete...really only a few minutes drive across the Skyway and into Palmetto. I keep my boat at the Regatta Point Marina.. http://www.regattapointemarina.com/
Shoot me an email with your schedule...I will be in and out of town over the next couple of months but we'll see if we can get you out on the water.
If you're headed my way some "Full Sail", "Dundee Honey Brown", "Killians" or "Amberboch" will get Bamboo underway pronto!
Something akin to this subject I've been thinking about is getting together with boat owners that live close by. Not necessarily to sail but maybe just for a dinner out, shoot the breeze, compare notes sort of thing. It seems some of you guys on the west coast do that but us Floridians need to make an effort to do that I think
There was a pretty big dinner gathering one recent winter in Ohio (Dayton?)--I was almost (but not quite) able to make it coming off a business trip in Columbus. I recall some folks (including couples) went some distances for it and got hotel rooms.

On the Wooden Boat Forum, they call that an EBS. An Elbow Bending Session. Sounds like a right proper thing to do. Dan
My boat's open any time. I live 40 min. from Boston, and 15 from Providence RI. We'll sail out of East Greenwich RI. There's a great bar and restaurant with very fresh seafood at Norton's marina.
If you click on the link below you'll see my boat. It's on a mooring now. The movies are on Buzzard's Bay on the Cat. 350.
I did meet up with Ed in Indy. We went out to see his boat, man is it a beauty! He has a great sailing place and a sweet yacht club. We chatted for hours and had dinner and a beer. All in all a good night. The weather was blowing too hard with thunder and lightening all around so no sailing. 70 mph winds clocked at the airport. Had a good time. Hope Ed did also. Dan
Dan: I did enjoy our outing and passed an e-mail on to the powers that be, much like yours, to see if we could get a link set up for a group of meeters and greeters. I think a lot of people could take advantage of it. I'll get back when I get an answer.
I sail on Long Lake in Maine. Long Lake is about 12 miles long, it is just north of Lake Sebago, approx 40 minutes from Portland Maine. We race every Tuesday evening at 5:30, I like to leave the slip around 4:00 - 4:30. Pretty much I'm in that area most weekends in the summer. Boat is a Capri 25. Always looking for company and a good time. There are lots of restaurants and bars in the area.
