Going on the hard in (2) weeks and one thing I must do is inspect the Keel this year. I am planning on changing the cable and installing a Catalina Direct retrofit kit to stop sidewards movement.

Last year I had the boat on a trailer and could not drop the keel, How high must the boat be in order to drop the keel inspect it and do the repairs?

Hi Frank,

How high up the bottom of your boat needs to be will depend a bit on how low you like to crawl around and the kind of mechanism you'll be using to lower the keel.

Figure about 20 inches for the keel, plus the height of the hydraulic jack you're using, plus any dunnage, plus lowering the keel 6" or so; and you'll get three to four feet.

TWO "MAKE-SURES": 1) Make sure that you chain the half dozen or more boat jacks together across the boat so that they don't slip outward and let the boat fall. 2) Make sure that you have an adequate way to keep the keel from flopping over.......1500 lbs can get out-of-control pretty quickly.
