Hi Everyone,

I'm hoping to launch our boat for the season this week, so I'm getting everything as ready as possible.

I'll be towing the boat from our house to Lake Tahoe, a total of about 40 miles. I was thinking about installing the rudder now, and leaving it on for this short trip.

Any thoughts, suggestions, recommendations?

Thanks!

Martin

Martin,
I generally put my tiller in the bed of my truck while I'm towing, but my mast crutch sits in the gudgeons, so the rudder can't be there anyway. I'm pretty sure some of the guys regularly tow with their rudder in place because they have a spare set of gudgeons for the crutch, but I'll let them chime in.

I towed the 11 km to the marina with mine in place. Be sure you put in the cotter pin, and tie off the tiller handle so it can't swing back and forth.

Hi Martin, I have an Ida-sailor kick-up rudder and I have always towed with the rudder up. I have drilled a "lock up" pin hole for both up and down safety. The "down" pin is a plastic pin.

BTW, I noticed in one of the old posts that you might need a tow to the lake. If you do, let me know I live in Meyers and tow my boat all over.

I've towed mine with the rudder in place several times - never had a problem.

On the highway is no problem, it is backing down the ramp where you may hit bottom.

We've towed over 3,000 miles with the rudder attached - and the outboard too.

THANKS, everyone!

We towed the boat from home (Gardnerville, NV) to Lake Tahoe (South Lake Tahoe, CA) via Spooner Summit - a total distance of about 40 miles - and launched the boat (Tahoe Keys Marina) without any problems whatsoever.

Thanks for the generous offer, Paul.

We ended up buying a full-sized pickup (2008 Chevy Silverado w/ 8600 lb towing capacity) last fall, and it's now a breeze to retrieve, move, and launch the boat.

Do you sail much on Tahoe? (We just put in on a mooring at Camp Rich.)

I hope we see you on the lake this summer,
(Kali &) Martin
