I am preparing to paint my btm this weekend. I am using vc17m as it was used previously. I purchased my 1985 c25 swing keel 3 yrs ago. This will be my 3rd season in a fresh water lake in southern wis. The previous owner must have painted the boat on the trailer and never got the top part of the keel thats inside the hull. Its rusting but not bad. I am preparing to have my boat lifted off the trailer so I can drop the keel, check all points and grind the rust down with a steel brush. I plan to paint the keel with vctar according to instructions and then a coat of vc17m with the rest of the bottom. I have never done this before and am taking on the task. Does anyone out there have any pointers or expierence(good or bad) with this process. Am I biting off more then I should? should I have it done professionally?.. All comment appreciated. Thank you, proud c25 sailor
Barrier coat it first. Bottom paint isn't for protection of the metal. A coat of a rust binding chemical for anything the brush missed and then interprotect or something similar. If you want an easier but shorter term fix for fresh waterI, I ground, filled, and painted with Rustoleum rust binding paint on my previous boat's iron keel, then finished with two coats of Rustoleum. It still looked good two seasons later.
EDIT: I take it all back, I checked VCTar 2 and saw that it is now a recommended primer coat for bare metal!
I used rust reformer to cover any bare metal on my fin keel, then applied 2 coats of VC Tar with a 4" roller, and then applied barrier coat. Finally, the antifouling went on. I can't think of any particular tips. It was fairly straightforward - follow the directions on the can.
I dropped the keel on my 1980 cat 22 Then grinded down the rust as best i could. Then i used permatex rust neutralizer which turn the rust black. Then six coats of epoxie were put on. With fiberglass cloth on the leading edge of the keel. I would also suggest new keel castings that hold up the keel. The new castings will stop the keel from sideways motion. Also install a neww keel cable and relpace the hose ball and pin. This will give you piece of mind for many years of sailing. Good luck. By the way catalina direct has a video that explains this process in detail.
