Cracked forward hatch

A guest slipped and caught themselves with a hand on the hatch. It cracked across the forward corner right through the support attachment. <img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle> Is there an adhesive that works with acrylic? Anyone had to deal with this before?

Here's a link I found that lists all kinds of plastics adhesives.
I don't know if they sell retail, but it might be a start on getting the right info. Maybe call 'em and tell 'em your situation to get an adhesive recommendation.

I'm assuming that you have the smoke gray plexiglas hatch. In my limited experience with plexiglas (shop class in high school), I'd lean toward the solvent/cements. They break down the molecular chains and relink them (I think). but I don't know if they're suitable for an outdoor application. I would think so, considering how they work.

Thanks John, I don't think it is plexiglass, it has a metal frame but seems harder than plexi. I have the info on it in the boat (does me a lot of good there<img src=icon_smile_blush.gif border=0 align=middle>). I was hoping to arm myself with adhesives before I go back down.

It has a metal frame? Are you talking about the stock forward hatch or do you have some sort of aftermarket hatch?

Don, That's part of my problem, I don't know if it is stock. The information I've seen shows the stock hatch did not have a metal edge and was much thicker. If I recall correctly the info I have with the boat documents identified it as a Lewmar hatch. I will find out this weekend. I will go prepared with adhesives suitible for acrylics and hope I have what I need.

Hi Doug,

'Sorry to hear about your hatch ... 'rotten luck.

I don't know if the hatch design has changed over the years, but there is a guy who is selling parts from an '84 Catalina 25 (in case you might want to replace the hatch). I looked on his website, but I didn't see one listed (nor did he mention that it had already been sold). Anyway, I've gotten a couple of items from him, and he is a good guy to deal with.

I just replaced mine. The part came from Bomar Item 941 (just the plexiglass and some adhesive necessary). cost about 100.00 Easy to do just make sure the gap is 1/8 of an inch at the bottom (beteen Aluminum and plexiglass)of the Hatch so that the dogs will lock.

Last year I replaced my hatch glass with new at a local plexiglas dealer. For around $35, using thicker material, he cut out a new piece using the old as a template....and if it breaks again then I can do the same repair without looking all over for the specialized stuff from Bomar or whomever...

Doesn't look like I'll be going to the boat this weekend after all. <img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle> Have to wait till next week.

Since I keep it in Mexico I need to repair it until I can get a replacement. Thanks for all the input. I feel a little better that it won't be hard to find a replacement.
