We have a 1979 Catalina 25 FK with a 9.9 HP Johnson Sailmaster outboard. I believe the outboard mount is the original. The mount and/or bracket is set to low for our outboard, which was not a problem in calm water, but was a big problem in swells. In addition, the bracket is extremely difficult to lift - to the point where I don't think my wife could do it if she had to in an emergency.
So I am planning on installing a new outboard mount and would like to know if anyone had any recommendations. We would like to be able to have alot of room for adjustment of the height of the motor once installed (the existing bracket has just up and down locations) and would like it to be very easy to pull up and down.
I bought a garelick two seasons ago and find it to be adequate. You are going to find however, most of the mounts do not have the same extension range that the original has....
If it's the original bracket, it's probably a Garhauer. They can send you parts and/or rebuild it for you - even add a second spring for additional lifting power.
I'd suggest that you try going the rebuild route. But here's another tip. I built a simple lifting device that works pretty well.
I used a strap to fasten a small double block on the engine. Then I used a rail-clamp arrangement to put one on the stern rail. Then I attached a stand-up block on the top of the transom, and a small horn cleat for fastening.
I use 1/4-in. line to lift and lower the engine. Of course, I have to use my foot to kick out the latch bar on the mount, but that's not a problem. The 4:1 mechanical advantage that this gives me makes it a lot easier to lift that engine.
Marc, I too had an original Garhauer motor mount that became very difficult to lift. I ordered a new one from Garhauer's web site ($183 delivered). Two weeks later UPS delivered to my door. The new mount fits into the existing holes and has been beefed up a bit with two power assist springs and reinforcements along the lift arm. It has three postions up, halfway down and all the way down.
While I was awaiting delivery, I disassembled the old one to determine why it had become so difficult to raise. Within the tubluar arms that are the pivot points, are bushings that are made of tough plastic (Nylon?) and within the bushing is a metal insert and finally a 5/16th bolt that everything rotates around. On my lower arm, the bolt had seized to the metal insert in the bushing. Had there been a little more clearance between the 5/16th bolt head and the vertical bracket it probably wouldn't have been a problem.
