I am back after some hiatus (not that I was so notable that y'all would notice ) and moving on.
After sacrificing the diesel to Gabrielle and a complete, professional and expensive re-build it has been a struggle to put her back together and go out again. I noticed I felt so bad about neglecting and not using Enka, I did not even feel like coming here to read what was going on. Kinda embarrassed and did not need the reminder I guess. I said who needs this? Not me, not Enka.
So we finally put her back together and I continue with the wood re-finish and start some serious clean-up. I go for the first sail after 18 months with a friend (who dove to scrape the prop clean) and by daughter. 20 min out my daughter uses the head and the pump handle comes off in my hand. I took this as a sign that Enka's had enough of me. (the story of changing the head is a separate post someday).
With one kid, we could never just quite fit in the boat (I remember swapping "day bags" and "night bags from the car. With two kids it seems impossible. Now I know that some of you take week-long trip with two kids, but that is just not us. We cannot fit in the car going to a cabin for a 3-day weekend. Why fight it, I thought. We are not sailing and poor Enka is getting not used.
So I decided to sell her and liberate both of us. It will be a bigger boat or live on charters for a bit, not sure which yet. Long story short, Enka is in the swap meet. Don't think any less of me (the admiral says that is impossible).
Life throws us challenges and we change tactics to deal with them. Charters and a larger boat are both great options. So is giving this some time and seeing what works best for you. Fair winds to you. Let us know what you are up to and, of course, don't forget that you can still participate in the forum even if you don't presently have a boat.
If you think selling (or thinking about it) disqualifies you from this community, consider moi, who committed the ultimate sin and was pardoned (by all but a few) for it. There is an infinite number of reasons to move on to a new solution, and I had several reasons, but never lost my affection for my old C-25 or for this community. (I've visited Passage with her current owner and participant here, Bruce Ross.) And I hope my 50+ years of sailing, although mostly casual, adds something to the discussions...
You bring a rare set of experiences to the forum, having owned an inboard diesel C-25 with a marine head. A minority here can speak to the latter, and very few to the former! I have never sensed ill-feelings toward any past owner on these forums--instead, gratitude for the knowledge, experience, and perspective they can add. Life is a journey, not a destination.
Just because you buy another boat don't think we don't need your input.. ie ( My Head Handle fell off )
This ain't no new boat...and believe me.. the new ones break when you use them. I think of it like a helicopter, for every hour of use there is an hour of maintenance. ( I expect the military guys will chime in with the real ratio )
Talk about knowing your boat (aircraft) to know it well enough to rely on it to work every time, and in a storm.
Now... I'm gonna go put some JB weld on my head handle.....
