It was 101deg with a heat index of 105-115 so I stayed in and watched the U.S.open championship. It was so hazy with light winds that sailing would not have been a fun thing on the First Coast. As a matter of fact even the stink pots were not out in force, me included.
We listened to the thunder, lightning, hail and monsoon-like rain all afternoon after going to pick up a rare piece of Monkey Puzzle tree in the morning. While getting ready to move the piece, I decided to take an impromptu trip out of the bed of my truck and down a retaining wall in the process, that was fun, and the bruises are coming up nicely, thank you.
Went to church, then to the boat to replace the deadlight on the foredeck. 95 degree temp, heat index with the humidity was 100. The admiral was much smarter, she stayed home enjoying the A/C. got a pair of the trail pants with zip-off legs to convert to shorts.
Earlier I called and chatted with my Dad for a while, and afterwards we had a nice brunch and did cards with the family.
We had cool, squally weather most of the day with northerlies at 10-15, with gusts to 35 kts. All the sail-boarders were out at the Sound beach. We got occasional showers.
Later in the day, my son (who's 25) came down to the boat and the breezes kept up, but the gusts vanished. We had a favorable tide, so we sailed down to the Sound, and took a spin. Surprisingly, there were hardly any swells, and little chop.
As we returned up the channel, the tide turned again in our favor, the sun finally came out and we got a nice breeze.
Everybody was hanging out at the marina, so we had plenty of help landing and more than a few offers of cold beverages. What started out an iffy day turned into a really nice one.
Spent about 2 hours in our berry patch & picked about a gallon and a half of black raspberries. The vegetable garden and traveling to the west coast on business have taken a lot of my time this month, but I'd like to go sailing in my own boat once this week, between crewing in SF and SD on other good-old-Catalinas. The sun's out today! Maybe I'll go for an evening sail after work.
Then got calls from our grown-up kids and had a nice dinner with my wife.
Frog, I know what you mean with the heat thing, it was about the same in Daytona. So what do you do? Get in water!! We went out to our favorite sandbar and cooked chicken wings, drank some beer and watched the dolphin swim by!
All great ways to spend Fathers Day. My crew came up with something less nautical but very rewarding....We went into Manhattan had lunch and saw HAIR. If only I could have figured a way to view this enchanting show while moored on Calista. But, hey ya give a little and and ya get a little. Worked for us!
HAIR was a good musical. I saw it in Germany in 1969, over there as an exchange student for the year between high school and college. I had to get permission from the draft board to go, which they granted, but for some damn-fool reason, they made me go through the induction physical before I left the US. Crazy time period, hippies, Viet Nam, etc. Had one older brother in Nam (Marines) and another one in Cambodia (Army). I lucked out with a high lottery number! Be interesting to see the musical again. Both brothers made it back, but the Marine brother just barely, due to an accident in Guam on his way home that was never fully explained to our parents. Left him in a coma for 5 days. He passed away last November, respiratory problems and diabetes, lived a good productive life though, and his wife has always been nice. He has a birthday coming up at the end of this month. I miss him!
We were lucky enough to be able to make a weekend out of it. Saturday was rainy all day, so steamed clams and drank beer at home. Sunday, absolutely perfect, 70 degrees and sunny, took a nice long sail then the kids swam in the lake at dinner time. How they handle the 58 degree water I don't know, but they loved it! Awesome weekend.
JJM, was that shot in Newport Beach, CA? how come you didn't give me a call? I had dinner with my family, parents and my brother and his family at a great German place. Great dark beers! Steve A
