To anyone speaking or reading German, what is the translation of this proverb? I found this on an abandoned sailboat.

The best place to be is sailing on a sailboat.

Ok, not an exact translation, but sounds right

I asked a German friend to look at it. This is what he wrote:

"Haha good one. It says in German, correctly spelled since your sign was OLD german, died out with my grandparents generation, really. A genuine piece.

Der beste Arzt is jederzeit des Menschen eigene Maessigkeit.

Word by word translation:

The best doctor is always one’s own moderation."

I think it says "Boat not abandonned, do not touch".

Here's more info from a German friend:

"A rather obscure quote from an obscure german poet,

This is written in old german, which would now be written:

Der beste Arzt ist jederzeit des Menschen eig'ne Mäßigkeit -

The best doctor is at all times Man's own temperance ( or moderation ? )

Johann Wilhelm Ludwig Gleim German poet born April 2, 1719, Ermsleben, near Halberstadt, Saxony died Feb. 18, 1803, Halberstad

( The ß letter has been removed by western keyboards )"
