I'm looking for an outboard motor flusher so that I can test my (newly tuned-up) 2008 Honda 9.9 HP, XL (25") shaft. There are several to choose from at West Marine, but I'm not sure which is appropriate.
Martin, No experience with any of those flushers but if the 2008 model will allow the following revision it will be a big improvement over any of the rabbit ear types.
That's not the model he has... he has the newest honda. Go to honda marine. There is an easy flusher that you can order that is similar to the mod posted above. Easy to use, only problem with i, if I remember correctly, is it can't be left on because the cover won't fit. Keep in mind also, it is a flusher only. The water flows in the reverse direction past the water pump, so if you are running the motor while repairing it, you must still use the earmuff style.
See your Honda dealer about this "flush kit" (the one in the middle). It's a brass hose adapter that screws into a hole in the block. There's some sort of check-valve inside of the hole. I don't remember how much mine cost...
In the end I took the "low tech" approach; I bought a 30-gallon (+/-) trash can, put it in the back of our pickup and filled it with water. I was able to easily maneuver the outboard into the water-filled barrel and test-run the engine for several minutes.
Somewhat surprisingly, the engine started and ran GREAT after my (first ever) tune-up. (Thanks for the recommendation to do this myself, Randy!)
Good work! Looking back, as a Lake Tahoe sailor, you don't need a flush-fitting because the lake is flushing you every time you run (compared to us in salt water). For test runs, you want a "tank"--period. Sorry I weighed in with the wrong suggestion.
