I got some spam yesterday addressed to my user name from the asociation forum. Someone in Africa hacked into the forum, but I don't know how to alert an administrator/moderator. Did anyone else get spammed this way?

PAUL - I don't remember the exact details, but this appears to all be that nigerian scam. There is a way to block IP addresses, I don't remember how, but it is somewhere wrapped in the admin functions. I used to look up the IP address then block it as long as it wasn't being used by a legit member as well.(dumped DB into access)
Also -related but not directly to this issue: the age requirement was only turned on to keep the 'bots' out. Most spammers program the bots to run a script based on the standard install. Turning the age field on as a mandatory entry hosed them up. You can pick another one of the fields if that seems too intrusive (other than address fields, they seem to handle that one)

Yes. Happily, this isn't "hacking in"--they aren't getting your e-mail address (unless you respond to them). They're manually going through our Members list, using the "Send e-mail" function that is there specifically to keep harvester systems from getting our addresses. (These systems scan web pages for address formats with at-signs.)

You won't see very much of this spam through the association--too labor-intensive. Just don't "game" them--they're looking for any kind of reply, and will keep using the association site if they get it. Meanwhile, hopefully we can block their IP addresses. I doubt there are any 25' Catalinas in these countries.

I am getting several emails a day. I just no longer accept any emails from the association. Divert all to delete upon receipt.

Isn't that weird? I've never gotten ANY spam in almost 3 years. (probably shouldn't have said that)
