It means a lot to me that our two countries are so close, yet maintain their unique identities and friendship. I lived 2 years in Atlanta, and I don't remember meeting a single person down there that wasn't kind to me.

The marina sets a barge in the bay and does a great fireworks show right over our moorings. Time to fly the colors and enjoy the freedom of sailing.. Happy Fourth of July, and may you all get out on your boats and find open water. I was out on July 3, and the crazies were out in force. I think I saw the ghost of Rodney Dangerfield reprising his role from "Caddyshack."
Thanks for the kind words. I'm at an inland lake near Atlanta and it is so hot and without the coastal wind we really can't sail until Sept. unless we ride a storm front. The lightening and thunder makes it a bit exciting. Enjoy the sailing up there and forgive us when we post about our sailing in the coming winter.
It had been very hot and muggy for several weeks but this weekend it was unusually cool. If I'd known I'd have been on the boat, although the lake fills with heavy drinkers on the 4th.
Don't hesitate to post with your adventures as down inland south we are stuck inside out of the heat.
The 4th & 5th were 20+ days in Fishers Island Sound--lots of bashing around--one mast came down that I know of, and a 73' powerboat hit the rocky reef at Watch Hill Passage... (We can understand--there are only three markers there--a big red flasher, big green gong, and the huge mid-channel "WH" marker there... ) He tore a 15' gash in the bottom, and had to run up on the beach to keep from sinking. Captain and wife were taken to the hospital--she with broken ribs. I guess you could say at least they weren't bothering the sailors in the channel... (And it reminds me to keep alert at 25 knots!)
I took a crowd down the river for a quiet cocktail cruise last night--not out into the sound where the drinks would have spilled. 75 degrees, diminishing breeze, beautiful sunset...
We are all incredibly fortunate, and have a lot of people to be grateful to for our good fortune!
Dave, the "cocktail cruise" sounds fantastic! I've been meaning to do that. It'll be another first for Windsong.
It was an extremely windy holiday weekend here. I spent the 4th on the hard (painful), but got out on the ocean on the 5th. Took my wife out and like an idiot I scared her, so I'm in the doghouse on that one. Had in a reef, heeled over pretty good and was skipping along at 6.5 kts on the GPS; just having a great time. Yee-hee. Then I looked over and saw my wife's pale face and the wind went out of my sails (so to speak). Rule number 1: Don't scare your wife. Oops. We sailed flat after that, but the damage was done. Feeling like a jerk right now.
Thank you Prospector. May our countries continue the policy of peaceful co-existance- and drop the stupid passport baloney (or at least make them free). I have always lived nearish to the Canadian border, but the two-three hundred it would cost in passports for my family is prohibitive. This is particularly glaring in the Glacier-Waterton International Peace Park on the Northern Montana border.
Narragansett Bay was spectacular on the fourth. Fireworks were visible from six or eight cities. Wind was strong, we were well heeled and spray was flying. Moon sailed for the first time. Near disaster though when we came to the assistance of a drunken sloop and I severed my fuel line when I dropped the engine quickly to bring the boat around. Felt like Ahab as I barked commands like mad to keep us off the rocks and a large luxury yacht. As it turned out the sots didn't need help anyway. Fortunately I was able to splice the line back together before we came to our mooring. Sailing is always a bit of an adventure for us- this is why we do it.
As I reflected on the idea of the righteous nation it occurred to me: You need liberty to have righteousness. But if you respond to righteousness, providence tends to side with you. In our case, though providence provided a timely breeze, you have to have a working engine to be helpful to others.
We had a family get together for lunch on the 4th complete with hot dogs, root beer floats and corn on the cob. Can't get much more American than that. Our club has a fireworks show on the lake each 4th so we sat on the boat at the dock and enjoyed the fireworks plus just watching the hundred or so boats that anchored out on the lake to watch the fireworks. When those big-boom explosives went of they created a "flashbulb" effect and lit up the hulls of all of those boats. It was awesome.
Speaking of independence - when are you Canadians going to throw off the yokes of the British Empire?** Just kidding!
**From Wikepedia: Federal parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy - Monarch HM Queen Elizabeth II.
You know Randy, about the only time we hear "God Save the Queen" played up here anymore is at a military parade, or when she's actually in town. Many of our own people aren't even sure of her role in our government. Its weird.
Anyway, the weekend was indeed great, except that I felt a tickle in the back of my throat on Friday which became a full blown headcold by Saturday night. I tried drinking it away, but apparently rum's medicinal properties are limited to things other than the common cold, so I headed for home, and stayed in my wee bed until today. I still feel like carp.
Friday night - crossed the lake on mainsail alone (about 18 miles) on mainsail alone. Held her above 5.5 kts all the way. Saturday - came back home - full main and 60% storm sail in strong winds with dancing horses all around. surfed at 7.2 kts a few times (GPS) but was mostly at hull speed all the way. Wind gauge read 20-30 kts (not sure its accurate). Sunday - stayed in bed and didn't get out until today.
