Anyone who has switched from a 2-stroke to a 4-stroke motor is immediately aware of the reduction in engine noise. While at anchor we would often complain about the sound level of a 2-stroke pushing a pontoon boat at full tilt from one end of a bay to the other. We were put on-gaurd this season when the horsepower limit was increased from 9.9 to 18. Sure we've seen a few fishing boats streaking across the lake faster than before - but they are so much quieter and they are creating minimal wakes because their hulls are plaining. Most of the pontoon boats on our lake are rentals. The rental concession sells all of their boats and motors at bargain prices every winter and buy all new equipment each spring. We noticed that all the rentals now have 4-strokes. I can honestly say that the quality of enjoyment at our lake has improved with the substantial decrease in outboard motor noise. And as Martha Stewart would say, "and that is a good thing."
Our lake is getting quieter too! But just for the same reason. When summer ends and the lake level drops boating activity drops. No activity, no noise. Not an enjoyable thing!
Every since the coast guard starting ticketing stink-boaters for running their exhaust above the waterline the lake got quieter. However, we have a couple of thousand if not more square miles of water out there so there always was a place to go hide from the noise when you really want it....
