My wife and I are planning a Western Caribbean Cruise this Jan/Feb and am wondering if anyone knows of places that rent boats by the day. We will be stopping at:

Georgetown, Grand Cayman
Cozumel, Mexico
Progreso, Mexico
and Key West

Any suggestions would be appreciated

Don

Check out this months issue of Sail magazine, there is a section devoted to charters. Also the classified in the back always has some listings.

In Jan. of 2001 we were in Cozumel for a dive vacation and decided to rent a Catalina 27 on our final day. I had seen a poster in our hotel. The boat wasn't in the best condition, but not bad. In any case, 5 or 6 of us enjoyed a delightful afternoon of sailing in some of the most beautiful waters you could imagine. As I recall, it ran us about $100 for a half day. Interestingly, the boat was an American and he had some tales to tell about how difficult the Mexican government makes it to operate a charter operation. In fact, he was required to have his operation set up so that he charged for the dinging ride to the sailboat, but the use of the sailboat itself was free. Some set up. I'm sorry that I do not remember the specifics of who to contact, but I will check if you are interested. Let me know. Enjoy your trip. Tom Coleman

Thanks for the information. I would be interested in details if you can find them.

I've looked at Sail and only see charters, like for a week, nothing that suggests an afternoon sail. an option would be to call a charter service and see if either they have day rentals, or know of anyone who does.

The "shore excursions" include catamaran sails with swimming stops, and key west has catamaran racing. Those are options. I am also aware that St Martens has America Boats that race, someone did that last year (that would be fun, but the cruise we're doing doesn't go there<img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle>

Frank,

Thanks for the suggest re. SAIL Mag.

I read the chartering section last night and found nothing that mentioned the ports we're visiting. Everything seemed to Virgin Island, Tortola, etc. Found one in the classified section that mentioned Key West, and they have something that fits what I think I would like, but I'm planning on racing catamarans in Key West.

Again thanks for the input.
