Hi All: I asked this before but I need more specific advice. I want to mount speakers under the oberservation seats and run the speaker wires inside the railings to the stern battery compartment. I can't see or access where the railings end from below and it does not seem like removing any of the panels would help. I specified 08' because perhaps in older 250s this might be easier. Any assistance/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
I installed connectors in the port and starboard quarter with wiring routed to the radio. I created 'pigtail' cables that connect from these bulkhead mounted connectors routed to the 'cat bird' seats with liberal use of zip ties; I did not route my wires inside of the support tubing. This has worked very well since 2005.
Yes - thank you. I was thinking of what you did but I really wanted to hide the wires inside the tubes. What speakers are you using? I can't decide what to use. Thank you again.
Yes, I also wanted to 'hide' the wires but did not want to drill in the SS supports. The wire / tie-wrap solution has worked very well though; I would do it again.
The speakers I am using are from West Marine (model WM-8000, 5x7 5 inch box speakers) I have had no problems since installation in 2005.
I have not done this particular mod but I have drilled holes in my stainless steel pedestal guard to run wires. Takes patience but certainly not hard to do. I think the trick for you would be to access the bottom of the aft rails. For that I would remove the aft bulkhead, it simply requires removing some screws, and look in the aft area to see where the bolts are for the rail base. Figure that the rail is centered on those bolts and drill there.
The speakers on my 250 are mounted under the Catbird seats. Don't recall how the wires were run from there to the tuner in the salon (she's at the marina and not handy to run out and check on). If you need info on this installation let me know.
I bought two marine, weather proof speakers that fit into each side storage compartment in the cockpit, drilled a small hole up high in the side pockets and run the speaker wires to the radio on the port side of the cabin steps. The speakers are small enough and mounted forward and high enough in the pockets to not take up hardly any storage space. Roger
Steven, Access to the catbird seat railings can be achieved by removing first the port and then the aft panels in the rear birth. It is easier than you would think and just involves laying back there for a while with an electric screwdriver or drill with a phillips bit. That being said, I am not certain if you can access the bottom of the tubes down there. You probably would have to drill through the fiberglass to run the wire through. I HATE drilling holes in my boat! Why not just get white speaker wire and white small wire ties and not risk sacrificing structural integrity for a minor aesthetic advantage? Willy
