Discovered on dousing the main yesterday that the topmost slug had broken apart. Any tips on the correct size for replacement, what to buy and where, and how to attach to the sail? Top slug attaches to a metal shackle-type fitting, which maybe unbolts to pass through the body of the slug. Lastly, if others may also be getting weak, should we go ahead and replace all of them? Since they are attached to heavy webbing sewn to the sail, this could get very expensive, I figure.
Like John said, there have been several threads fairly recently on this. We blew out our second to the bottom slug a while back. I figured it was going to be a giant pain to fix, but the reality was it was probably less than ten minutes with Rita's help. Randy (Nautiduck) has a pretty good method if you've got the same type of slugs as his, we didn't so we had to sew ours back on. We keep a packet of hand sewing needles and thread on board in our med kit, as well as a thimble.
I bought several packages of the slugs and bails and replace them as needed. I went to the slugs with the SS bails since they are stronger than the ones with plastic bails. I keep the items on the boat in my tool kit since this is an easy repair to do on the boat.
By the way, in strong wind place the mainsail halyard shackle in the aft hole of the sail head. That will pull the sail close to the mast and helps prevent slug failure. I leave my main connected that way all the time now.
Needed 3/8" round-shaped slugs, got the nylon version at WM. Easy replacement for top slug on metal shackle, will just need some plastic shackles to go in the tool box with the spare slugs for future repairs. Now we see how the webbing, sail grommets and slugs all go together...no worries!
