This is our third year w/ the 3 spring model. Prior years all has functioned fine. This year, the pin that slips into the slots on the positioning plate gets stuck in the full low position. Lowering the motor is fine, but raising is a bear as the pin hangs up in the groove.
Does/Has anyone else have/had a similar experience - any tips on a resolution?
As always, many thanks for your thoughts and advice!!!
I understand that those plates are a retro-fit for the older model mount, mine is a little newer and has the double plates...I've spoken w/ Lowell twice so far - he hasn't been very much help, but what we've settled on for the moment is that I'm going to gently file back a little of the 'bump' at the edge of the groove and see if that doesn't ease the movement...
I did exactly what Jerry did by filing the little bump made mine slip in or out much easer. In the lowest position there is more spring force to overcome making it harder to disengage the handle.
We use the 4 spring mount, installed by the PO. He had mentioned needing to file the holes slightly. When the unit began to bind in both the lower and secondary hole positions, I filed them out again, and haven't experienced the binding since.
Jerry, Glad the filing worked. I also slid the hinge bolts out, cleaned all the encrusted salt out of the tubes and re-greased them. I would not recommend this to anybody. The motor mount is like a mouse trap, pull the bolts out and twang! Very difficult to get it back together. With the hinges all greased and the tabs/bumps filed down and rounded a bit the mount works like a charm now. NHP??? Why the S. Jamesport?? Is that where the boat is?
I can see why it could be hazardous to remove the bolts...probably something better left for the off season and a sturdy work bench...I did go through about 1/4 can of sail kote and it made a huge improvement...yes, we live in NHP, but keep the boat in SJPT as we have family there.
