Between family commitments and house projects, I've been out of touch for several weeks...just starting to read through some of the recent topics.
This past weekend I attended 1 of the 3 day celebrations marking the St. Law. Seaway's 50th anniversary.
Like many who grew up in the SL Valley my family is scattered on both sides of the Canadian and US border and has a strong connection with the river and the communities on both sides. It was quite a revelation this past weekend, however, to be reminded once again how fortunate we are to have our two great nations working side by side at all levels. (Actually the Mohawk peoples were and remain an important third nation in the history and workings of the Seaway.) I also thought it quite fitting that immediately following the planned ceremonies, a US Coast Guard cutter, a large ocean freighter and a Catalina 27 passed through the Eisenhower lock where we were located. The physics, the engineering and the simplicity of the lock systems are incredible.

A side note for folks in the area - St. Lawrence Parks commission on th eCanadian side has built platform tent campsites at a handful of their campsites as a pilot program. You can call ahead to book a site and when you arrive a tent will already be pitched waiting for you. Each site is equipped with a fireplace and picnic table. Sounds like a good way to escaped cramped quarters after a day of sailing.
