I have a 1985 Catalina 25 tall rig and would like to install a flag pole on the middle of the stern rail. I assume that stainless steel is the best way to go for me, and was wondering if I could get some recommendations for purchasing a pulpit staff with rail mount that works well on a Catalina 25. Thanks for your help, Larry
Overton's (www.Overtons.com) has a stainless steel rail mount pennant staffs, 17" or 30" for $45. Page 175 of their 2009 Master Catalog. If you already have the flag and pole, secure the pole to one of the vertical stern rail supports with hose clamps.
I bought West Marine's version and mounted it on the stern rail and it works great. Another option is to attach your flag to the rear main stay as far up as you can reach.
Does anyone know what size rails the 79 stern pulpit has? I bought the 7/8" to 1" stainless steel rail mount and although I can fasten the mount to the rail securely, the mount ends don't meet entirely. That means that when I put the staff in the mount, I can't tighten it enough so it doesn't wobble (it doesn't come out because of a hole in the staff, but the wobbling is annoying). The "set screw" is pretty short and designed to fit if the ends met. I mounted it in the center of the pulpit.
I would think I got the wrong size, but the magma grill mount that came with the boat has a filler in it because it's too big and it's still loose - so I assumed it was the 1 1/8" to 1 1/4".
