If you're working on your winch while on the water take a box, cut hole in the bottom and fit it over the winch that way parts end up in the box not "ker plop". Caca Pasa! Happened to me too. Tried fishing for it with a contraption we have for getting things off the bottom but it probably sank deep in the mud. Pretty hard to get just that part anywhere. I trolled ebay and bought an old winch cheap. Used the cap from that one. While doing maintenance on winches earlier this year some other parts on that old winch came in handy.
I'd try fishing with a strong magnet on a pole and raking the bottom precisely where it fell. May take a while, but if it's plated brass or bronze, then you're outa luck.
