My boat has a aqua green bottom paint and I'd like to paint it black this year. Is it easy to change color or will the green come thru in spots? Also is it a big deal to change the brown water line stripe and the brown stripe to dark green? How is it done ?
Is the bottom paint a sloughing paint ? If it is then the two tone will work ok. I know several boaters who use blue one time and red the next. It lets them know when the paint has deteriorated enough to need another bottom job. Yes you can change the boot stripe just sand the old on to rough it up a bit and mask it off. Paint right over the old color. When you do the bottom try to find a paint or same brand that is compatable with what is presently there.
Last owner had marron paint on the bottom that I painted over with Interlux micron Extra with Biocide. their instructions say you can and I read somewhere that the marron under painting would serve as reminder of when I needed to repaint of of areas I need to touch up.
So, I suppose where you can just paint over one bottom with a new color depends on the paint used for both bottoms.
I also painted the waterline, had some hull pitting when I took it out of the water that needed to repaired first. I used a one part paint (Interlux Brightside) taped both the top and bottom and painted. Pretty easy and fairly quick. The difficulty is waiting for the paint to dry before putting the next coat on. Like 15 minutes to paint and it seems like four to six hours for the paint to dry. The can instructions will tell you how long to wait.
