The rudder head on my '84 Capri 25 - Chutzpah - has a broken compression clamp and Catalina Yachts believes one from the C30 will work.
My concern/question is that the old broken one is rubbing against the raised form in the cockpit causing it to wear. Is this a function of the broken rudder head or has some other bearing been compromised inside the receiver or on the shaft?
What holds on the rudder other than the rudder head? If just the rudder head, what prevents further wear on the mount??
My boat hull #433 has two elements you did not mention. I have a plastic washer between the rudder head and the raised form. This serves as a bearing/wear surface. Also my boat has a bolt through the rudder head and the rudder shaft/post. This bolt is not tight enough to hold the rudder head rigidly connected to the rudder post, that tightness is dependent on the "clamping" of the rudder head. The through bolt does prevent the rudder from falling out of the boat if the clamp is loosened for any reason. Let me know if you need any pictures of this set up.
I guess the rudder washer must have disintegrated as some point. I've ordered both a new rudder head and a replacement washer from Catalina. Hopefully the C27 rudder head works okay. Otherwise, I guess I'm heading to a machine shop for some CNC work...
