Well, we are now the proud new owners of Athena, a 1996 C250 WB, #227. My wife and I picked the boat up yesterday and trailered it down from Chattanooga to Birmingham. It trailered really well, but when we got home, I noticed the upper portion of the support pole had bent. We didn't secure it laterally, so I think it was the swaying motion during the trip, rather than the weight of the mast itself. At any rate, I've only found one reference to it so far, from Catalina Direct. Looks like a new one costs $179 plus shipping. Does anyone know of anywhere else to get one, or if just the upper portion can be replaced?
Hi Brian, I bent mine a couple of years ago during the winter because of snowload. I fixed mine by finding a couple of "suitable trees" in the backyard! I looked for 2 trees that come out in a "V", placed the pole in the "V" .... pulled hard and bent it back!! Not perfect, but usable
I thought about bending it back, but it was in the uppermost position when it bent and it would never be straight enough to slide in the lower tube for raising and lowering again. I've since learned that you should lower it when trailering, which I'm sure is the reason it bent...The upper pole with the crutch is only 30" long, and in the upper position, there is only about 6" of the pole in the lower section...not alot of support for the bouncing around and swaying it takes while trailering.
At any rate, I was able to find a metal company here in Bham that had 1" OD stainless steel tubing about the same thickness. I bought a 4' piece and I'm going to drill a few holes for raising and lowering, and then have the crutch bracket with the roller welded to the new tube, and hopefully be back in business. And, I'll be able to raise it a little higher with the crutch when stepping the mast next time!
Good sailing down there, too. The admiral is from Mobile. Last time we went to gulf Shores, we did some sailing on a charter boat in the bay behind (north of) Orange Beach. Next year I really want to do the Fairhope to Dauphin Island race.
