We have recently purchase a 84 Catalina 25. The interior cushions are original and slightly musty . We live in central CA and have our new boat berthed in a freshwater lake year round. Do we need to use any special fabric or foam on the cushions?

TV,
Welcome to the C25 class of '84 and to this forum! Nice choice.
When we bought our boat, same thing with the cushions. Unless the foam is in bad shape, you should be able to keep them. I used a Hoover spot carpet cleaner we have here that has a wand with sprayer (no moving brushes or agitator that might tear up the fabric), then left the cushions out in the sun for several hours to dry while I did other things on the boat. It did a good job. I had to be very careful around one area where the fabric was quite worn. Eventually I'm going to have new covers made, but it's just not in the budget right now. Lysol spray cleaner or other mildew-fighting product works well on the vinyl portions.
There's a wealth of knowledge on this forum. If you haven't already done so, please join the Association. It's $22 very well spent. You'll find that almost any question you might have about your boat can be answered here, and in fact probably already has at least once.
Also, if the prior owner didn't pass it along to you, get the parts handbook from Catalina Direct. Also well worth the money.

Nothing special, although I'd say away from natural fibers like cotton...

We had new cushions made by an auto upholstery shop, using medium-density foam (4" instead of 3 for the bottoms) with a layer of fiber matting on top, as is used in some furniture for a little softer touch. We chose a Sunbrella upholstery fabric (not their marine canvas) with a soft linen-like texture--but there were many others to choose from. It wasn't cheap--slightly under 20 Boat Units--but it was a totally worthwhile gift to The Admiral, and most certainly contributed to an instantaneous sale 6-7 years later.

Welcome again!

Only tip I would add it to reuse the vinyl part of the existing covers. It really helps having that moisture barrier on the bottom.

I pulled one of my covers off and put it in the washing machine, gentle cycle. I washed the foam in one of those commercial washing machines and let it dry in the the sun. Came out nice.

Welcome to the forum, I also sail in Central Ca. But out on the Delta near Ilseton and Rio Vista, if you would like to get together and trade tips or sail together, drop me a line.

If the outer fabric is in good, albeit "musty" shape, I would remove the covers from the foam and take them teither a sail loft or commercial laundry to be cleaned, any stitching done and keep using them. If you need to replace them contact Catalina Yachts (vs Catalina Direct)as they do make replacement cushions and in the last couple of Mainsheets have advertised to do so (new boat sales must be slow).

Thank you all for your great information. Lot's of different options. We will let you know what direction we are heading. As for the name Trader Vic, Vick is our last name so it was kind of a no-brainer. Makes us want to go tropical.

I had the same issue with my '79. I found a family-run curtain shop, gave them the foam and had them make all new covers. They were able to buy the sunbrella fabric wholesale and saved myself loads of money. (and much less than going through Cat Direct) Good Luck

I'm also in central ca. live in Atwater and sail at Lake Yosemite. there are quite a few Cat25's at Don Pedro, also close to Modesto. If you need any help I can provide just give a quick message here too. We are always eager to go sailing at other locations.
